Just got my 2004 996 with 53K miles, had the LN bearing and RMS replaced within a month of owning it for piece of mind. The removed IMS had some minor play in it (not sure if this is normal). Driving the car now without having the IMS thought in my head.

Default No IMSB failure - 2003 Carrera Cab Tip

Just bought a 2003 911 Cab Tip with 81,000 miles. No IMSB failure, no replacement.

It would be great to get a run-time (mileage based) report on when the IMSB failures occurred if anyone is up to it....there appears to be a mileage threshold after which the incidence of failure declines but this would need to be verified.

No failure. 2000 C2 Cabriolet.

Bought used, first thing I did was drive it over the weekend and then drop it off for IMSB, RMS, clutch and a few other preventative items.

IMS bearing came out and was in seemingly perfect shape.

How many miles and did you upgrade the bearing? The IMS forums are like visiting the emergency room where everyone is complaining, ignoring the millions of healthy people outside doing their daily living.

I bought very clean, unmolested car with 93k miles, but no service history aside of one receipt for a new alternator install. Car ws running fantastic, but there was some chain rattle. Mech found little bluish-green rubber o-ring bits in the oil. Bearing has been upgraded to the Vertex Eternal kit w/pressure fed cylindrical bearings. Clutch, RMS, chain tensioners, and a host of other things are being done to get rid of the rattle and put me at ease. Also, to re-establish service history with longevity in mind.

Bought a lovely 2004 40th AE, 62k miles, no IMS service. I wanted the peace of mind, so I immediately had the LN dual row kit installed, found the RMS leaking and water pump leaking. Replaced both. Clutch and flywheel were near perfect. The original IMS bearing was pretty "sticky", not turning or spinning smoothly. Felt like it was clearly a good time to make the change. I can't help but feel I may have dodged a bullet.

Congratulations on the purchase and getting the PM done. I just bought a 2003 C2 Cab with 81K and am thinking of doing the same. What did the work cost you? What kind of shop did the work?

I voted a year ago, no IMS issues. After driving in fear for a year now, I elected to have the preventative maintenance swap done. Installed IMS solution kit, $1,800. Also installed clutch kit (disc, pressure plate, throwout bearing). Rear main seal had a drip on it, replaced that also.

Ready? .... original bearing was in PERFECT shape. 1999 with 51,000 miles.

Congratulations on getting the work done. Did you have a shop replace the bearing or was it a DIY? If you had a shop do the work, $1800 sounds like you got a great deal, assuming they did it right. Or was that just the cost for the solution, and not the labor, tool charges etc?

Default Party with Kesha...

Well after dropping the motor due to plastic particles in my oil pan, which turned out to be some very worn VareoCam pads and IMS chain paddle guard. I decided to have a look at the state of the IMS and IMSB and do some upgrades. Good thing I did because after removing the Dual Row original NGK bearing with 100k miles on my 2000 911 Tip I noticed the bearing had excessive play and the inside of the IMS looked like a bag of silver glitter had exploded inside. There was some oil and really thick grease splattered on the inter walls of the Intermediate Shaft. I assume that's what kept all the metal shavings in place. Because I had no metal shavings in the filter, after the DIY removal of the bearing it looked like I had partied with Kesha. Hands and work area full of the silver glitter. Now I will have a $450 paper weight to display on my desk. I plan to replace the IMSB with EPS cylindrical bearing replacement. Which is already in the mail and on its way. mean while I will be cleaning out all the metal shaving or glitter .

Not if he doesn't tear down the motor and clean it properly.

He didn't catch it before it failed, it already failed. It just hadn't taken the motor out yet. That debris is all over the internals of the motor working it's magic and no amount of flushing the oil will get it all.

Beyond rebuilding and cleaning the motor, is there anything someone can do to flush the motor to prevent damage from the metal particles?
