Recently changed mine for an LNE ceramic bearing. Mine was a single row bearing but in great shape so it may have been one that could have gone 200K miles with no issues but I feel better having done the upgrade. My car is an 02 Cabrio 2WD Carrera with 37K miles.

My 2001 had the clutch go. IMS was okay, however had a new one installed. Found metal shavings in oil pan.

Mechanic says it's bearings. Should I panic. Sugguesting a new/rebuilt engine.

Default Metal Shavings. Should i panic

Have a 2001 Porsche 911 Carerra. Mechanic found metal (non metallic) shavings in oil pan. I only have 35.5K miles

IMS checked out okay. Should I panic! Is my engine going to blow up.

Very concerned.

How can anything metal be "non- metallic"? Maybe non- ferrous, but all metal is metallic.

So after finding metallic debris in the oil sump, they moved forward with an IMS Bearing retrofit?

Which IMS Retrofit kit was supplied for this job?

After the work was done, what instructions did they give to you for the interim, and extended future??

I meant to say non-ferrous, I went in for a busted Clutch and they suggested a IMS Retrofit. I agreed and asked the mechanic to find a oil change. After metal shavings were found, I said to only fix the clutch. They took the IMS off and could not put it back on and the mechanic went ahead with the retro-fit.

Mechanic said to be careful with the car and not to drive it at high RPMs. Mechanic has been fixing Porches for 40 years.

Just confused am not sure if I should dump the car. Sugguestions?

40 years, or 40 days, or 40 hours. Makes no difference to me. Guess who normally calls us with the most bazaar issues? Those 40 year guys. Guess who I can't beat this engine's operation into the brains of during hands on classes? Those 40 year guys. They are great with aircooled engines, but never became proficient with the M96, as a general rule.

Which IMS Retrofit product was installed? What is the name of this shop, and where are they located?

NEVER "dump" a car, karma is a real B-I-T-C-H and the next guy might hammer you in Court. I've seen a dozen of those cases in the past few years, and it gets ugly fast. Making your problem someone else's is never the proper choice.

THE DASHBOARD SAYS NEED SERVICE NOW , TWO DAYS AGO I TRY TO TAKE IT TO THE PORSCHE MECHANIC AND I TOLD THEM I NEED TO GET OIL CHANGE , UNFORTUNATELY THE MECHANIC TOLD ME IF MY CAR DID THE " IMS" INSPECTION , SO HE LOOK IF ANY STICKERS IN THE TRUNK AND SEE NOTHING . HE SAYS I SHOULD GO BACK TO THE PLACE AND ASK FOR IT BEFORE HE CAN DO THE OIL CHANGE .... ITS VERY ALARMING FROM MY SIDE AND VERY SAD AND DISAPPOINTED ABOUT TELLING ME ABOUT THE IMS ISSUES .. PS. HE TOLD ME IF NOT DONE TAKE THE CAR BACK OR SELL IT .. ITS MY DREAM CAR AND TOOK 30 YEARS FOR ME TO HAVE THIS CAR AND BROKE MY HEART ... THANKS ... HELP ...

My advice: find another machanic before throwing in the towel. It's best not to drink the kool aid from a IMS downer.

Well the IMS issue is so well documented if you did not know this before buying then the seller has no reason to talk to you again. I was also unaware of the IMS "issue", in quotes because it may never happen and it may destroy your engine in a heartbeat. How does your car feel? Mine felt fine but I did an IMS replacement for peace of mind. They vary between $2000 and $5000 depending on which bearing and shop you choose. So, my recommendation is to find another Porsche qualified mechanic. Have them look at you oil and filter when changing it and see if there's metal in there. If so, you have issues and must address them. If not, then the choice is yours whether to stay with the factory bearing or replace it. IIRC the '05 has an improved bearing and suffers less failures but I'm sure others here will chime in with recommendations and ways to diagnose the health of your car.

2000 996 C4 with 106K. Took car into Franz Blam Racing for a good look over and a few routine maintenance items. While in the shop and after reading Flat6 Innovations "Pre-Failure Directives," I asked Franz to check the IMS. Good thing is did. Failure was imminent. I now have an expensive paper weight. Replaced with a LN Engineering IMS upgrade with ceramic bearings.

So, the original Bearing was found to be failing, and Franz performed the Retrofit anyway?

What special instructions did he provide you with for the future?
