$5k is to rich for my blood. I'll probably do it myself this fall. Clutch was done a few months ago by a dealer. The guy I bought it from was clueless about the ims problem. He had a good service history on the car. I'm going to call the dealer and see if they checked the bearing. If labor was around $1K at a independent porsche shop I would just let them do it.
Thanks

Porsche did mine along with the clutch just before I bought the car as part of the used car inspection before sale. The car was a trade in and had always been serviced with them since 2007 and 12k miles (I bought the car with 63k miles). They provided me the bill when I purchased the car. They charged 13hrs of labor and around 1450$ of parts (700 for the IMS bearing and 680 for the clutch kit). Here is a photo of the bill with all the details.

The only "permanent" fix available at this point is the "IMS Solution" from LNE/FSI... Although the EPS roller bearing is claiming that it's a "permanent fix", there is no real data to support such a claim (it's only been available for a year or two...). Caveat Emptor

Actually I didn't even ask for it. Hendrick Porsche did it through their own inspection. So it looks to me that as a Porsche dealer they are considering the potential of IMS failure on 996.

I found a porshe shop in birmingham that said they would install the eps system bearing for about $1100 labor. I think I'm going to let them do it instead of doing it myself.
