Apologies if this has been discussed already (though I did have a look...). Does anyone know what the current state of rumour is about the engine for the next gen Spyder? I'm assuming a Carrera S engine (so 3.0 TT), but then again it might stay NA like the GT4 is rumoured to do. Anyone heard anything? Thanks.
planning a future purchase?
Have heard nothing other than the gt4 rumors you mentioned. Evo stated in the 718 Cayman review that the Cayman engine bay was designed so it could still take a 6 cyl...making it sound like the boxster wasn't.

Historically the Cayman and Boxsters have shared the exact same chassis with exception to the roof so that bodes well for the upcoming Spyder.
i think its on evo's magazine, https://rennlist.com/forums/gt4/9343...o-stay-na.html
at this point its nothing but rumors, if Porsche wanted to make the next spyder a flat 6 then they will just change the chassis.

At this point I wouldn't assume anything. There have been 2 Boxster Spyders. Only the most recent one took the engine of the outgoing Carrera S.
If I had to guess the next Spyder will be a 400 HP turbo 4. Porsche is hard on this 718 4 cylinder marketing kick so Why would they give the car that best ties into the aesthetic of that theme a 6 cylinder engine. It would be a huge marketing mistake and undermine the whole 718 series.
The GT cars are really their own category and should remain NA at least for this next round.
Surely it will be a 4; hope to be proved wrong but as previous poster says it undermines the whole 718 ethos if it's a 6, I certainly doubt a turbo 6 based on fit issues.
I still think the idea of an NA GT4 is fantasy. As others have stated, it undermines the rest of the Cayman lineup, especially now when they are trying to get it off the ground and wipe out prejudice against the turbo 4. If I'm wrong, and I really hope I am, then there's a very good chance the 718 Spyder will get the same engine as the GT4.
Well, we're probably not going to see the next Spyder for another 5 years, so I'd be shocked if it still had a NA flat 6 in it. I'd bet money it'll have a turbo 4.
The GT4 '.2' on the other hand I expect will be a different animal, both in terms of timing and construct. Would not be surprised at all if it stayed NA through the next iteration. But who knows. Speculating on future Porsches is a game of chance.
either way Porsche will do what they always do, make us want it ;-), I know its fun to dream but the next one might be all electric for all we know. with a Ludacris mode
I think that, from a pure marketing point of view, having the Cayman / Boxster range with a 4 cyl turbo and the 911 range with a 6 cyl (turbo as well, with possibly one exception for the GT3) makes sense.
Porsche has recently repositioned the Boxster above the Cayman in terms of pricing, with no difference in engine power, which sounds logical: they need product rationalisation and convertibles are always more expensive than coupés. They probably also plan to set a clearer difference between the different model ranges in the future.
Acting this way, getting the Cayman / Boxster models close to the 911 in terms of performances would be less of an issue... So I'd vote as well for a tuned 4 cyl turbo in the next gen of Spyder / GT4, but only time will tell.

Will the NA 4.0 991.2 GT3 undermine the turbo 911 line-up?
Thanks for all the replies. Reason for asking is I've just seen this for sale somewhere local to me
981 Spyder in Voodoo Blue. It's pretty special. If it's going to be the last of the NA Spyders then it would be even more special to me, possibly rising up the ranks to 'tempting'...
