Default Hard to start thread

It seems there are many issues with hard to start so I thought it a good idea to see if we can get a basic list of how these issues were solved. Perhaps list symptom and how you solve it?

My problem seems like it's fuel related. After a hard to start episode I get white smoke then idles and runs perfect. Shut it down and it starts right up no problem. Warm up the engine, wait 15 minutes then back to the same issue.

The list of parts I have replaced so far without solving the issue: Fuel regulator, coolant temp sensor, fuel filter and check valve.

Ideas please.

No sense in making a thread for hard starting, just ask for help and people will offer ideas.

Have you looked at the Garage Shop Manual on Clarks-Garage.com?

Please describe in detail the hard to start situation.

Be specific about what happens, how long it takes, noises, etc.

Did you do a fuel pressure and leak down test? I'd also recommend doing a vacuum system leak check. There's several posts here on easy way to do them. Also keep in mind that there's vacuum leak possibilities under the j boot and the intake manifold.

I pulled the vacuum line off my fuel pressure damper and fuel is dripping out. Not good right. There should not be fuel on the vacuum side I'm guessing. I'm thinking the diarpham is bad allowing fuel to pass. Make sense?

With the vacuum line taken off I caught a pic with fuel starting to drip.

Cut open the fuel filter for fun. Here's what a filter looks like with 64K on it!

White smoke is usually water, I'd check the plugs right away. Post a pic. Coolant in a cylinder will make it hard to start until cleared.

Yeah, could be a leaking head gasket if there's white smoke. If it's coolant in the cylinder, it will start and only run on 3 cylinders for a little bit and sound very different to normal. You can see which cylinder it is by feeling which exhaust header is cold. Then check that plug. This is what happened on mine, and sure enough it was a leaking head gasket.

Looks like the fuel damper was the trouble. New one on order. I plug the vacuum line from the damper and the car started perfect. First good cold start since I have own it!
Thanks everyone for the advise.
