How much power can 82/83 forged rods take?

Default How much power can 82/83 forged rods take?

Just out of curiosity. I'm not shooting for absurdly high power or anything, but what are these suckers good for? They're Rarst, sintered and forged, which I understand is a different manufacturing process than 951 drop forged rods. Does anyone know what limits that imposes, if any?

34 years or three and half decade old rods of most likely multiple owners? Lol, good for stock or chipped ,that's about it.

Looking for actual data, but thanks. These are 40k miles. My current motor has 170k 83 rods that have been tracked for over a decade prior to DD duty, with a layman (me) tuning it to somewhat beyond stock power levels.

and although I can't confirm, the 924 GTP car had 400+ hp and was probably running them in 1980. I just want a sanity check before I throw them into a boosted motor. I guess, I'm just curious how they compare to normal forged 951 rods.

It seems like even cast rods are capable of the power...

I have Lindsey Racing 951 rings (440B stainless upper ring) in the mail and will be using 951 pistons. But there doesn't seem to be much conversation about early NA forged rods.

Do you have a photo of these rods? This is a 944 rod with a 106mm piston

Best photo I have on hand, from right when I pulled the pistons. Yeah the oil varnish was basically everywhere.

They're not cast... 82-83 (and very early 84) were sintered, which is a forging process (powder forge).

Because I already have them. I don't see the need to get 951 rods unless these are going to let me down, at my target power levels (250-350 whp). They are stronger than cast rods but I'm trying to gauge by how much.

The connecting rod discussions here are typically very opinion biased ("forged good", "cast bad") with no stress analysis (such as FEA) or test (yield and fatigue limits) backup. This is not surprising, since the tools to do these analysis and tests are very expensive and they are also very time consuming to perform.

Here are a few interesting often overlooked facts:

1) The 944 Turbo Workshop Manual lists the connecting rods as being "Sinter-forged".
2) Chris White* has mentioned that Porsche allows both the cast and the forged rods to be present in the same engine.
