Your post is titled "Exporting..."; are you looking to do a permanent export of a road car?

Unless the car was originally built to US specs it'll be difficult and expensive to get it legally registered.

Unless the car has the sticker on the door sill reading something along the lines of "The vehicle manufacturer has certified that this vehicle complies with the Federal Motor Vehicle
Safety Standards (FMVSS) applicable on the date of manufacture." you'll probably have to spend a lot of time and money in convincing the relevant authorities.

Rich, if it's a Porsche contact these folks.. they do many Porsche importations
I know most of the process if you have any questions
depending upon year it may be exempt from many of the changes required by newer cars

If you get any more info, particularly something that contradicts what I posted, please do post it here. I was always under the impression that it is very difficult (read expensive) to legally "federalize" a car that wasn't initially built to be compliant and that it was only worthwhile for high value exotics.

phelix is right.....

i was looking into bringing my right hand drive 944 turbo from ireland to florida and was told by many importers here that it would be a nightmare with red tape and the expense would be horrendous......thats asuming i managed to get the car passed for importation in the first place!!!!!!!!! i've decided to leave it in my garage for when i'm home in ireland and i'll pick up a turbo here......much more sensible i think....

Have a look at this site: http://www.bmwworld.com/bmw/importing.htm

It gives what seems to be a good summary of the issues and some useful links.
