Leave the menu at left - but add an option to hide it.

Across the top. I'm on a 12" Powerbook so I have to scroll back and forth to get the full picture with it on the side.

I like it as is. You can use the side bar by going to forums.rennlist.com or no menus at all via the /rennforums/ link .
Most of the time I use the side bar.

Good points going for either choice. I like sendarius' the best though. Why not make it an option?

Better still would be to put another of those drop down menus with all the forums listed, like there is at the bottom, at the top too. It's such a hassle to have to jump to the end of the page to get to it. (And where is it, when writing pms and stuff?)

Having said all of that, if both can't be made an option, I vote for top. Haven't shown the sidebar menus and have linked directly to the 928 forum since almost the first month we were here. We like the wider screen.

I don't ever see the side menu, so it's a litte hard to care about this change.

I would like the side menu removed on some computers at different airports the screens are so small that the side menu takes up a lot of available space, and there is no way to hide it.

For function, the top line dropdown menu I think is a better idea, that way when you dont need it it doesnt remove valuable screen space

Menu on top or 'close menu' option on left... either way, more screen space!

Also, for the future plans... faster servers, but ones that don't auto-duplicate messages, or say it can't display a message only to back button to do it again and then say it's a duplicate.

Top bar choices need to be on bottom also & vice versa (thanks Leslie).

Whatever works is fine for me. I am still able to learn new moves(probably not for much longer) and will stay either way. But my druthers are the existing format as my learning has slowed way down. And I have everything bookmarked, if the change occurs, well goodbye bookmarks. Great site either way , I'll be back.

I think the menu on the side is a huge waste of real estate. This wouldn't be such a big problem if the site supported scaling of attached images. Large attached images in a thread frequently force horizontal scroll bars in the right hand frame, and cause text in the message containing the images to wrap at the edge of the images, instead of at the edge of the screen. The first message in this thread is a case in point. Removing the left hand menu frame would reduce this problem, although not eliminate it.

The menu at the top is a great idea provided is subsumes (or preferably reduces) the space taken by the top-most frame (the one that contains the "welcome-willkommen ..." image). With as many as 5 distinct navigation/menu bars, the last thing the site needs is another bar consuming vertical space. This would also eliminate the competing "Jump to" and "Go to" drop downs, which I've always found oddly schizophrenic.

I disagree with the other posters assertions that drop down menus are problematic. The site already uses them in various places (Search, Quick Links, Forum Tools, etc.), and they seem to work well. I would suggest you keep the menus as small as possible and stay consistent with the iconography (e.g. the inverted triangle that marks drop downs in other places).

All in all, a good idea I think. Thanks for asking for our input on this.

No Menus at all. I go straight to forums. Really, how difficult is it to hit the folder button to take you back to the main page. Folder meaning the Rennlist>Aircooled>993....thing at the top of each page.

Leave it, it's fine the way it is. You guys at IB just want to move it so you can put another ad over on that side.

I like it the way it is. If I wanted a new, modern layout, I wouldn't be driving a 25 year old 928, would I?
