Default Lately, Rennlist search function unreliable at best

I’ve been trying to use the search function lately, and it is VERY unreliable.

About 20% success.

Has anyone else been having trouble with the renn search function?

Cheers,
Michael

Yes, seems it works only part of the day. Like 10 hours or something.

It also never seems to find what I'm looking for. Even when I know that the thread exists. It doesn't seem to go back into the archives very far.

And, more importantly to me and my primitive typing skills, Spellcheck has been busted for a long time!

Moved to the Help & Feedback forum so John D. will see there is a problem.

While he's at it....
How about removing the wait time between searches for paying members?
I can understand that the wait is needed to keep automated machines from hammering the system.
But if a member is logged in then that shouldn't be a problem.

+1

When the search doesn't work properly, the wait is even more of a pain.

Hey guys....

Over the past 3 months, the "Search" has really been problematic on my end. I could tell you "I'm working on it" (which I have been - as time permits), but the fact of the matter is....

We have over 4GB of raw messages, or about 4.2+ million posts with an average post length of over 250 words (OK - do the math )... I've optimized *everything* on my end on that server - but frankly, with the number of messages, number of visitors during peak times, number of simultaneous "searches" - it's NOT a code problem. In short - the server (which was "bleeding edge" about a year ago) that does the database back-end really could use an infusion of something more than my "blood sweat & tears"

Anyway - a couple of suggestions....

Do NOT use the "forum wide" search (as it pulls all 4+ million posts). Try the specific Forum search..

When you "search" - try to be specific, with for now - two words. Like "seat delete" will work, but "rear seat delete" won't. But of you think about it - who the heck would want to "delete" the front seat", so "rear" is kind'a silly...

As for the time between searches - when I get the new server - I'll readjust everything. But for now, let's let it stand, OK??

Best to all!!!

As most searches aim to find some specific info which is in some technical forum I think easiest limitation would be to allow single forum search at a time. Or at most search in same groups that exist in the list now. There's little point in keeping for example OT messages in same search in most cases when one wants to find gearbox repair tips or something similar.

Since most people are too lazy to select anything from the list when they don't have to, admin simply needs to help them choose by not allowing full option. This should help a lot based on what little I know about databases.
