Need ideas: winter/go train car

I would imagine winters in the GTA do not require AWD. FWD and a cheap set of snow tires will do.
I would suggest considering a
Golf TSI
Golf GTI
Jetta
Civic
maybe a new Kia Forte?

Seriously, for Go train car I highly recommend a Golf 2.5, no turbos to worry about with rock solid reliability and the lowest maintenance. I drive my Son's Golf all the time while he is away at school and absolutely love it for what it is. I tuned the ECU for power myself from 170HP/177TQ to 185HP/200TQ and it's still reliable and can run with the GTIs.
My 2 cents

A Jeep Wrangler would be my choice + you can take it off road for fun, that and it holds it's value.

I've given a buddy way too much flack for driving a Mini. If I got one, I'd never hear the end of it.
At this point, I think it's between a Golf R and STI. All depends which I can get a better deal on in the fall. The RS4 keeps calling my name though...

My buddy is looking unload his fully sorted RS4 - grey color (all heavy ticket items are replaced -clutches($$$), carbon cleaning, brakes and rotors($$$)). He also just acquired 997 gts so looking to move this one.
If you want, i can connect you with him.

I've had 5 911s (including GT3), have a Spyder now and honestly...the JCW is just as much fun as any of them. Maybe more because I just don't give a **** about it.

Why flack? It's brilliant. Nothing drives like my 2013 JCW. It's my second...sold the C4S for a Golf R (boring)...sold that for an RS5 (my second...also kinda boring)...bought another JCW for $24K cash. Love it. Other cars are just pylons! It has the GP seats, alcantara wheel, carbon shifter, piano black trim...nice interior, tons of space (I'm 6'5"), barely burns gas, cheap to maintain...

I bought my 09 BMW 335i x-drive for similar reasons. Although I live in North Waterloo which gets considerably more snow than Toronto, so AWD was a requirement.
I am a bit shocked about how much I like the car. With a simple $250 tune it is now over 350 hp and considerably faster than my 996. Handling and road feel is also very good. Traction in the snow is awesome and you can pull away from almost anything on the road both in corners and a straight line.
Reliability is bit questionable though. I haven't had any major problems, but the model does have its share of issues like the high-pressure fuel pump, fuel injectors, and turbo wastegate rattle. Thankfully the engine itself is almost bulletproof.
I wouldn't recommend it if reliability was the top requirement on your list. But if you are looking for a fun sports sedan it is pretty hard to beat.
