Storage insurance question
so quick question. Fighting with my insurance company over renewals and house rates but it triggered another question. For those of you who store your car for the winter, how much does your insurance drop by taking collision off? Mine only dropped by like 20 bucks a month which seems odd.

The weather has been nice at times thru the winter that id prefer to take it out for a run then take it off ins, but mine is on a lift in the rage

I had put my Boxster on fire and theft coverage only (no comprehensive, liability, or collision) during the winter. The effective rate was around $60/month for storage coverage vs $160/month for full coverage. Mind you my driving insurance rates are a bit above average because of my young age, but that should give some idea as to the numbers.

I saved more than $100 per month on insurance when the P-car is in storage

4Many companies will be dropping the option of "winter storage" ins. The 2 companies I deal with have already deleted the option and many more will moving forward according to them and a few friends I know in the industry. Was only a matter of time I guess.

I have heard of brokers not insurers having this policy. This makes no sense. Why should we pay full pop when not driving? Greedy insurance brokers do this. I would not be surprised if brokers start advertising that they offer reduced rates in winter when storing your car.

Look at the collision part of your premium on your policy. Divide that amount into 12 months. This is roughly what one should be saving when one removes collision coverage from a vehicle policy. I say roughly, because collision rates are higher in the winter so theoretically one should be saving even more. That is what Allstate does for me.
However, motorcycle policies have stopped offering that a few years ago, so I wont be surprized if car insurance market adapts this as well. We even used to be able to pay only a portion of plate sticker fee for summer cars. Not anymore.

Besides, my yearly premium for the 912 is like $600. Which I am sure takes into consideration that my 67 Porsche is likely not driven in the winter at that price. No need to change the broker who takes good care of my needs for a mere few hundred dollars savings.
edit: This is from hagerty.ca
Maintain Insurance – You might be tempted to cancel your auto insurance when your vehicle is in storage in order to save money. If you remove coverage completely, it would be a major loss if a fire started, the weight of snow causes your roof to collapse, or if a theft occurred. Even if just collision coverage is temporarily removed, the car would not be covered when another moving object (for example: a tractor or motorcycle) rolled into it, or if the car were to fall of its jack stands. If you have classic car insurance, namely with Hagerty, the policy covers a full year and takes winter storage into account in your annual premium, so you don’t have to worry about your car over the winter months.

While everybody has their own policies open.... read the value line for your car? Are you happy with that number? Paying a paltry 5oo buck for your policy on your $3oK car? Do they have it valued at 10k?
Make sure you are happy with the value,if not, get your car appraised and agree on a value. Watch your deductibles ... perhaps you can raise it to 5oo or 1ooo? saving you 300 a year?
