Way OT: Phone for 11 yr old boy - Apple products
Looking for a refurbished or used phone for my son for Christmas.
He will likely be getting the $15/month prepaid texting package from Koodo. Last June, his 13yr old sister has a used 5s that we got free from relatives, but she is not a phone person...
Our price range is max $300 all in for the phone. This limits the amount of phone we can get him, but it's the way it is. Unfortunately, this is about keeping with the jones... his friend down the street has had the latest phone since junior kindergarten (which is an oddity around here), and he just found out that his 9yr old cousin got a phone because he now rides a school bus 1hr each way to school in downtown TO.
I am not part of the Apple universe, but that is what he wants for most of his games are from his ipad mini. I have been part of the Android universe for the past 5 yrs so I'm not familiar with what's out there in Apple land...
Is a 4s still a viable phone?

You can safely use a 4, 4S, 5 or 5s. But only if they are running IOS 7 or 8. Anything higher and they run like ****. That's how they get you to upgrade.
I just purchased a mint 4S from a guy in Burlington and it is running IOS 7.3. Just using it as an office tool, but it runs fine with the older software.
But if we wants the latest and greatest Apps, running an older version of IOS will eventually become a problem.
Also lots of grumblings on the net about 10.1.1 causing decreased battery life.
Personally I think a used 6 would be your best bet for the faster processor and ability to run IOS 9 or 10 well. But you will likely need to up your budget to at least 400 to snag a decent one.

I'm due for an upgrade.
One of my friends just upgraded to a iPhone 7.
Sold his 6s+ for about 575?
Lots of adults trading out.
I'm sure you can find a 6 or 6+ for 4-5oo ?
I find the plus has a better battery life. Bigger phone, thus bigger battery.
Some of the 6s have an apple battery recall happening now?
My 13 year old NEEDED a phone, or else. I look at his use on our bill. 2-3 minutes a month.
Not needed. The 11 year old has wife's old 4s. Great phone, good battery, does not have the latest software. He does not care, I don't care. He has a phone, it is in his back pack, too ****ty for anyone to stealt. I have a pay as you go. $100 for 12 months. Card expires at the end of 12 months, well before the talk time. Kid has a phone. Done. Really its a convenience thing for the parents. Where are you? Where is the soccer bus? When do you need me to be at school to pick you up.
Neither kid have data. WiFi only for data. Don't need to like like like like on intagram all day.
How will the kids ever know what a good phone is, when they have never had a bad phone.
This is your teaching moment.

Phone for a kindergartener? You got to be $hitting me. My 9 year old rides his bike over to his buddy's house when he wants to talk to him and the 11 year old had an iPod. Texting isolates people, especially kids.

Android phones have a feature that can text you when they leave school for instance. It is built into android. then you can get mobile plan with text for about $35/month.
I am sure many of you have read how cell phones are bad for children's brains. In Europe they advertise the dangers of kids using cell phones. In north america they advertise "share everything" plans for kids.
