Default Can you trace a licence plate?

Someone backed into my car in the parking lot and a good Samaritan wrote down the plate number.
Is there any way I can "look them up"?

You can get a name, vehicle and VIN, but no address. $12.

hope all works out well.
I hate it when people hit and run.

Load the MyCarFax app on your smart phone. Run the plate and you'll see some data. Maybe you can use that to find more or use the service history to hunt a little.

Or just report the hit & run with local LEO.

Report it to police as a hit and run. Your insurance will not be affected by the claim. Let the cops deal with the plate number.

I don't think insurance will cover it with zero deductible if you don't report it to the police, so, like everyone's suggested, I think you should start with that. But by all means, if you want to TP their house, run the vehicle abstract, do some googling, and chances are you'll find the address!

Before you report it, you might want to consider one thing...

Which will cost you more, the repair or the depreciation for having an accident on your car's history? Even if the insurance covers the damage for free, it might have a significant impact on your resale when it comes time to sell the car.

Sure, you can explain to a potential buyer all day how the accident was minor, but Porsche buyers are picky as hell, and will want a discount for sure for a car with accident history.

Anyway, just something to consider.

Ya it was the 996TT.
It's in a parking lot so I don't think the cops can do a thing?
Bumper to bumper head on at low speed. Apparently they were backing into the spot in front of me and tapped the bumper. There were a couple of little spider cracks before, but it's worse now.
I'd just like to call them up to say people are watching *******.

The link Christien provided says it won't give you owners name (online order) but if you go into the office and buy the Used Vehicle Info Package using the VIN it will provide you the current owners full name but no address. I found the owner who traded in my 993 to the dealer this way.

This is an excellent point!

They can, the question is will they. HTA applies in any publicly-accessible driving area, where the public is invited to operate a vehicle. I learned this checking out the cell phone law - I wanted to know if they could ticket me for using my phone while driving on public property. Turns out they can.

Did the Good Samaritan leave their contact info?

Youll need a witness.

If not, id still report it. And I track them down myself and have a letter sent to the owner of the car by a lawyer friend.

Sorry to hear about this Rod. Did this happen after I dropped you off after lunch?
I was in an accident on private property (work vehicle) a couple of years ago. The cop at the reporting center (York Region) said equal fault call your own insurance company.
Some guy hit my car (20 yrs. ago) left a note with all his info. I never got a dime out of him. I wound up going through insurance, my rates didn't go up.
