Crap! Sorry to hear that Rick. What a huge unnecessary expense. Wish Porsche helped out people in these situations.

Bummer Rick. This sort of design flaw should really be covered by Porsche.

Ouch Rick,
But get it done.

Ya not too happy obviously

The dealer is going to give me a quote for a rebuild tomorrow. I know there will be cheaper places to get it done but it will give me a benchmark

I don't see that I have much choice other than a rebuild as I can't imagine a 2006 cab with bore scoring is worth much. But it does make me question whether I keep it long term which was my intention. If this issue has now stung me then I will always be concerned about it. And I want a daily driver. I guess a 997.2 or a 997.1 turbo is an option to avoid this issue (but I guess its still possible with the .2)

Anyways first things first and that is to decode where to get it done. Danny has a guy that has done engines for him and EU is the other place I will check

Beside the $$$$ factor I am so bummed that I will be without my car for a couple of months I am guessing

What causes this?

Why wouldn't the Turbo be susceptible?

Lastly, put a 4.0-litre in! ;-)

sorry to hear this Vern. I was hoping it was something else. I think they can rebuild it using parts that won't allow this to happen again.
This is a good reason for owners of m96/97 engines checking their oil filters and having their oil tested.
Good luck.

Make sure you are sitting when the dealer call with the replacement engine price. Last I heard and I'm not kidding, it was over $50K USD!!! Rebuilds are anywhere from $8K-up. The $8K USD ones are just a refresh but if the other Bank isn't scorred, they can replace only the scorred half. Zookie had experience with that rebuilder. Maybe he can chime in with his experience.

****ty news Rick, sorry to hear that.

IIRC correctly Zookie used MB Motorsports in the US, last I checked they have a page of rebuilds on their website as well if you wanted to do a quick rebuild price check.

Not the same engine but a friend of mine paid $45,000 for an exchange GT3 engine at Downtown Porsche. That was 2 years ago.

Differential expansion of piston and cylinder walls I believe is the greatest cause in colder climates. I believe the mezger uses different cylinder linings but I may be wrong. 4l I wish

I thought they just used a new block and it would also be possible to have this issue again but again, I will have to ask

I don't think they were going to quote a new engine. He mentioned a short block and reusing the heads. Will see what he says in the morning but I will not be paying 50k for anything

Just less than 80k kms. I believe cylinders 5 and 6 were fine
