Scoring Confirmed

100% agreed. I've created a thread keeping track of the rennlist scored cylinders I am coming acrross, I just added this thread to it:
https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...-or-mk2-2.html
To the OP, Really sorry you are going through this. Its horrible. I bought my car two years ago, drove it for a month before I found out about cyl 4 & 6 being toast, toast, toast.
I'm rebuilding my motor myself. I'm almost done my long block, and I'd say I'm about 15k in so far. that Includes LNE 4.0 nickies, pinned IMS and LNE IMSB.

Are you a mechanic or a serious do it yourselfer?
Did you have to contract out certain work?
Where were your credible sources of info (torque values, procedures, etc...)?
Did you have to buy new tools?
Was it worth it ( maybe pay someone to do it?).

Sounds like someone did to you EXACTLY what Greg described , found out they had scored cylinders and sold it.
Absolute minimum PPI check in my mind.

Someone also sold a black C4S with Porsche crest on the back lid, super or turbo charger taken out of it that had also had scored cylinders and SCB passed the PPI and helped sell it for the owner. New owner got screwed.

WOW .. just WOW .. number one reason you have the PPi done at a mechanic of your choice .. and hope to god he is not in bed with the seller..

I've just created a poll in the 997 section...I simply can't believe the number of threads on this issue!

The guy from MB Moters has already reached out to me. The y rebuild in Poland (not sure if that is good/bad/indifferent)
I mean people used to be obsessed with the IMS and now its going to be scoring I think as these keep popping up

ah, ok. gotcha.
Scored cylinders will be worse as I believe it will happen on all of them eventually. Especially with those driven up north.
Im sure some will argue that, but I'm pretty comfortable with my position on it.

AWD, can you answer a couple of questions related to this scoring issue?
Are you a mechanic or a serious do it yourselfer?
I am not a mechanic. SRS DIY, yes. Absolutely. I strongly believe in "If you want it done right, you DIY"
Did you have to contract out certain work?
LNE did the 4.0 and provided the pistons, pinned IMS shaft and new IMS bearing. BV small engines here in Ottawa did all the head/machine work.
Where were your credible sources of info (torque values, procedures, etc...)?
I took Jake Raby's online building course and bought his torque spec book. I am also friends with the Porsche dealers mechanic here in Ottawa who hangs out and drinks my beer while we do engine stuff Charles at LNE and Jake at flat6 have been tremendous in helping me out with my questions. Nothing but good things to say about these guys.
Did you have to buy new tools?
yes, about $1000 worth. IMS tool, wrist clip pin tool, RMS, Cam timing tool, etc.
Was it worth it ( maybe pay someone to do it?).
Ill let you know when Im done. haha
I messed up doing the engine and forgot some important dowels. This was after doing the 4 5 6 cyl install (blind install of wrist clip pins). So I got to do 4 5 6 install twice as we had to separate the block and do it all over again (i can confirm the 1st install was flawless ). The experience gained from doing all of this is absolutely priceless.

I don't think it makes any difference where the machining work is done as long as the quality is there. The person doing the work is more important than where they are. Europe has tallended machinists (some of the best ones in North America came from there).
