Default Which waterpump for a 996?

Which water pump would you buy if you are looking at non OEM? The plastic or the metal wheel better?

IMO it' worth paying the extra for a Porsche W/P, aftermarket's seems to be failure prone

Buy the OEM pump with the plastic impellers. Do not buy the metal one as the bearings can fail in the future and the blade will grind away inside the housing and now your toast as there is no repair for this. There are lots of posts on this if you search.

Demand USPS and ship right to your door. Usually don't bother collecting HST under $300....

I got the Pieburg model (as carried by Pelican Parts), low temp thermostat, gaskets, and shipping for US$335 to Niagara Falls address last July, bought from Roger Tyson of 928s R Us, fast service too.

You must be unusually lucky! I've been nailed for as little as $65, but that's around Christmas time a few years ago.

+1 for Roger, he is the parts supplier extraordinaire. You will find none better.

Plus he ships by DHL if you need it faster, typicall DHL charges are $18-$40. Last package I had delivered directly here was worth about $700 and my DHL charges were $28. To my office, not sure if that helps vs residential.

Check with Brad @London Porsche, tell him Rob with the GT2 sent you, great guy to work with, knows the market is competitive and works a fair price.
I buy a fair bit through him despite knowing/using all the typical online/USA retailers, I also just ordered a waterpump this week through him(amongst a fairly large order)
Cheers,
Rob

+1 for Roger at 928RuS. He sells all the porsche parts, OE or aftermarket. Exceptional price and service. He is a vendor on RL. You can find him and his business on the 928 forum.

As for not being able to fix a metal impeller damaged 996 block, this is not correct. Just how Gregg Brown on the 928 forum built a system to easily fix this, so did Raby on the 996. I've discussed this in at least one thread on the 996 forum.

I personally prefer metal impellers over the 'plastic' but you need to treat the W/P as a maintenance item(or at bare minimum, a regular check item) and not as a failure item like so many do(same with plastic as well).

ECS Tuning also carries the Porsche water pump for ~$300. They are close to Ontario (Ohio), ship USPS, and have excellent server (from my experience).

Thanks for all the comments. Yes, I am leanign towards OEM, and I have ordered from suncoast before, I can't believe its' $299 there, and $471 at Pfaff.

What else should I do while I am replacing the waterpump? Thermostat?

I am doing it more as a preventative maintenance, it has been 60000km since the last one.

Jake categorically states NOT to buy/install the metal one. I attended his meet and greet last year where he discussed this and many other 996 issues. People who attended will back this statement up. He has also mentioned several times in the 996 forum the danger of metal blades. Jake only mentioned he had investigated a repair but he recommends his engine rebuild clients replace the water pump every three years with the Porsche OEM plastic pump.

Here's a comment he made on it: https://rennlist.com/forums/11039659-post4.html

Irregardless if someone has the ability (shade tree or pro) to fix a f**ked up internal casting bore that the pump fits into - its an example of a failure that even the 928 guys acknowledge that plastic blades are the way to go and are investigating a supplier: 'We have a few folks working on a fix, Roger is working on a deal with Lasso for a new pump with a plastic impeller, I think that is going to be a very good choice for many people.' (not sure of date of this comment).

This procedure has NOT been demonstrated on a 996 yet, nor has a tool been built for it to be used on a 996. So its still a theoretical repair on a 996 until we see that post and those photos. Its also not an 'easy procedure' (subjective term) given the % of 996 people who even work on their own cars.

The back story to this repair is that a plastic impeller was not available to the 928 community until 2008 (OEM) and 2010 (aftermarket). Many 928 owners had damage before this availability - hence the ingeniousness of the people involved in this repair procedure. I salute them.

But that doesn't dismiss the fact that there IS a solution for 996 owners to prevent a complicated repair like this one - BUY the OEM plastic part - install it and treat it as a maintenance (replacement schedule) item as per the manual.
