Default Porsche Mechanic Recommendation

Hi everyone,

I have a 2001 Porsche 996 tiptronic which i have had the following two error codes for the last year:

P0740- Solenoid Valve- Torque conv. clutch

P0710 Transmission Temperature Sensor

I usually do all my repair work/maintenance myself (changed water pump, wheel bearings, brakes, oil pressure sensors, etc) but I am having a hard time diagnosing this problem, mostly due to the fact that I don't have a lift in my garage and its very hard to work under the car with just jack stands.

I'm thinking of just taking the car to a Porsche mechanic (Not the dealer) to have them look at this, can anyone recommend a decent shop that will not charge an arm and a leg to look into this?

Thanks,

I have used Liam @ Keltech when he was in the west end of town, and Hunter more recently. Both great guys.

Because you asked for great tech AND a reasonable price, I would go to Brent @ Hunter Motorsports. If he spends half hour on your car then thats all you will pay for. Not saying its any different anywhere else, just that Brent was always nice to me and my brother. I even got a free PPI once.

As far as the codes: The torque converter issue is a known issue with 996 Tip's. That's the bad part. The upside to this issue is that it mainly affects the automatic operation in the 'coast' down mode. I've had a solenoid torque converter code for years and it isn't an issue if your like me that uses it in manual 99% of the time. Generally the issue is a faulty solenoid that controls the operation. If you have a code for the converter itself... along with the temp sensor - I would want to check the fluid level right away. Its a goofy procedure to change the fluid and costly - but the color and smell of the fluid can tell the mechanic a lot about the condition of the transmission. Its rare to have a convertor failure without other issues with this transmission... It may be time for an R&R. Brent uses a specialist in Kitchener for this.

Good luck. I used Hunter and Mantis for work - either are great.

Depends, on my Cayenne TT the torque converter seal start leaking. If caught before it runs dry it won't do any harm to the transmission. We never did get a temp sensor warning but I have gotten it after it was fixed while at the track after pushing it for 30 mins.

I didn't know it was a known issue. What happens with me is it drives perfect in auto or manual mode but on a few rare occasions after driving for over 1.5hrs it will go into the reduced driving program (4 and D flash) but the car drives perfect still, no difference at all in the way it drives or shifts, but the flashing just scares me lol. Once i park the car and come back the next day, usually it is back to normal. The check engine light stays on though until it is cleared.

I will get the fluid level checked first thing!
