Default AC evac and fill

Any suggestions on a shop to evaluate and fill my AC with r134?

I'm putting in all new o rings, receiver dryer and valve this weekend.

I have any appointment at active motors who work on my SAAB. they quoted $200 for the job. Only going there since I have a relationship with the shop.

JM Auto Electric in Brampton (tel: 905-595-1267). I used them a few years ago to fix a leak on my 993's A/C. They were also working on a 928 when my car was there. No affiliation.

Is appco still open? I thought Thomas closed up shop a few years ago?

If you just need to add coolant, I have the valve hookups, all you need is the can from Canadian Tire. That is, assuming the 928 valves are the same size as the 911.

Thanks Christien, I believe the hook ups are the same, but I need the system evacuated since I'm moving from r12 to r 134.

**** as I type this I realized totally forgot about Mantis. Going to give them a shout tomorrow. Would much rather have a Porsche shop work on my car.

Adam, it doesn't really matter as long as it's a good AC shop and most are. Was your AC work fine before the retrofit?

Last year it worked a bit, this year dead. Compressor is kicking on, I'm assuming the coolant leaked out.

The leak might still be there. One more reason to use a good AC shop instead of a Porsche garage.

I'm going to change the o rings this weekend, dryer and expansion valve. Will look at some other shops, I agree and AC specialist is probably best.

Yes still running, Thomas is a very close family friend. Still working on Volvos and Porsche's-still straight-up, no-B.S. style lol; also has his employee Scott who is A/C certified/trained IIRC.

Thanks Gents, looks like I have a few options, leaving them all open for now. Thomas is very close to me.

Thomas is hosting his annual Volvo show/swap meet/etc. this Sunday(morning/early afternoon), might be a good time to check out the facility if you haven't before and maybe have a chat with either Scott or Thomas, I'll be there with the GT2(and a Volvo or two) and dad's old 930 will likely be coming as well with the new owner...

well while you are working on it a few pointers.

If you are looking for leaks look for oil , any connections where you see oil it means it is leaking there. May be helpfull in determining leaks. depending on the system you may need an expansion valve that goes in the evaporator . I got mine for my Audi from an AC shop for 8 bucks .. juts hard to find on a weekend.

Make sure you use the green vitron orings .. and new PAG oil

Iwhat a shme this stuff is really expensive and i just sold my Audi and threw out a brand new unopened container of PAG oil and a whole bunch of o-rings.

On Porsches the the big leak area seems to be the evaporator. So dont be surprised if they tell you it is leaking.

Probem with a licensed AC shop is this . If they find a leak you arent expecting , they can not refill it and must tag in the history of your car it has a leak and it needs to be fixed before they will fill it . If you take it to them before you empty it they will charge some labour but tell you if there is a leak and where.

If you empty it then take it to them they have to dry it , put a small amount in just so they can do a leak test , test it , and then if they find the leak they wont charge it and hand you a bill for the work. So make sure you ask a lot of questions.

Taking to a friendly shop tomorrow to have it re-filled and with some die to see where it's leaking. No sense tearing into it without knowing more. Hopefully i get working for the trip and then deal with the leak when I'm back.
