If you're from Toronto (and to a lesser extent, Montreal), you undoubtedly have been plagued by the masked bastards known as Raccoons; easily a far greater threat to our way of life than terrorism and Styx concerts combined.
Their numbers have grow to absolutely rediculous proportions in the last 2 years and they've now taken to ****ting on my deck on a nightly basis.
I've managed to trap and relocate two of them far enough away that they havn't returned, but there are at least two more from what I can tell.
Last night number 3 managed to spring my trap and escape so I doubt that it will be as effective in the future.
Anyone here have any other trapping techniques?
Critter-Ridder = useless.
Fox urine = useless.
Hitting them with a shovel = useless, they just come back the same night.
Leaving outdooor lights on = useless and not cost effective
Shooting them with a 22LR or 9mm = very effective but too much penetration will damage the railings on the deck/might go into neighbor yards (9mm, doubt a 22 subsonic would).
Shooting them with an airgun = ineffective, the fat bastards just shrug it off and keep going about their business.
Poison = would rather not since it seems like a pretty unpleasent way to go, but since it's in a back yard and there's no neighborhood pets or children that have access, it's a possible nuclear option.
Unwelcome mats are basically boards full of upward-pointing nails placed in front of doors and windows to discourage bears from entering buildings. They are simple and inexpensive to make.
'Safe, effective bear unwelcome mats are easily constructed from materials available from your local Hardware or Farm and Ranch supply stores. You may even have all the supplies you need in the tool shed. Build a mat from plywood and nails/screws or electrify your mat. A properly constructed, installed and maintained electrified unwelcome mat will delivers a short, non-lethal, deterring shock when the bear steps on it.' http://www.bearsmart.com/becoming-be...ear-deterrents
Water gun full of vinegar has worked for me.. get a big powerful one, hit them full force.. Wont hurt them, might sting a little, but when they go to clean off their fur, they have to lick it, which is gives them reinforcement to stay away.. Also very effective on the neighbor's cats, which have decided they want to crap in my backyard.. The neighbor, however, has developed a craving for Fish and Chips

Watching an urban video in TO somewhere, they can get into the craziest places . Bow and arrow might do the job with the tips cut of so they won't penetrate just sting
