Yes, they're the same at the high end, but 0W-40 is formulated differently than 5W-40 - folks (like LN) that have tested have found that the 5W-40 oil provides a better protective film at higher operating temperatures than 0W-40.

...and why use a '0' oil (which is a winter spec'd oil, good for cold starts below -20) in the Summer?

+1 and I cant figure why M1- 5W wouldn't be on approved list?? Has a high shear resistance+ similar viscosities at 40 and 100 degrees. The only notable difference is the viscosity index.. slightly lower sulfated ash but higher Zinc and phosphorus which are excellent antiwear additives.. Anyone else??

My SAAB also specs 0W but I run 5W...

I don't get it either...would be nice to know exactly what's required to become a "Porsche Approved" motor oil.

5w40 castrol porsche approved at CT for top ups. Given all thr LN write ups I would not use 0 weight on pre 09 996/997 cars.

Castrol Syntec 5W-40 is a "Porsche Approved" motor oil - thanks!
Know what it's HTHS Viscosity is?
If its better than Mobil 1's (0w-40) 3.6, I'll probably go with it, since it's readily available at CT.

A big fat check would be a good start

Also keep in mind many oils are chosen to get that fuel efficiency number

M1 V Twin 20W50 Autozone, Walmart, etc. but only USA 'cause it's almost 1/2 the price.

Default M1 TDT UOA

Have a look at this post:
M1 TDT CI-4+ / SL, the pre-SM formulation with even higher Zn and P levels than SM version currently available.

http://www.renntech.org/forums/topic.../page__hl__tdt

I switched to Motul X-Cess after.
No UOA available yet, but no oil added in over 5,000 kms and no shearing.
I would NOT go back to M1, 0W-40 or 5W-40. There are better oils out there.
YMMV of course.
Happy motoring!

Porsche put it [oil] through the Porsche 996FL Engine test. This test will last 203 hours. The engine, and the oil, will go through:
- 4 times the simulation of 35 hours of summer driving,
- 4 times the simulation of 13.5 hours of winter driving,
- 40 cold starts,
- 5 times the simulation of 1-hour sessions on the “Nürburgring” racetrack,
- 3.5 hours of “running-in” program
Measurements on the engine and on the oil will be done at regular intervals, and the following parameter will be taken into account to grant the approval or not:
- torque curve (internal friction),
- oxidation of the oil,
- Piston cleanliness and ring sticking,
- Valve train wear protection. Cam & tappet wear must be less than 10 μm.
- Engine cleanliness and sludge: after 203 hours, no deposits must be visible.
- Bearing wear protection: visual rating according to Porsche in-house method.

Gents,
Castrol 5W-40 shears down to 30 grade at about 6 thousand miles or so.
Stop by Renntech and search for posts by "JFP from PA". He covers it extensively and suggests to use Castrol 10W-40 instead with much better results. However Castrol 10W-40 is not available in Canada (at least not available in Western part of it).
So, change it frequently.

Thanks for the advice to date.
I agree, while I still have a little warranty, leaning towards Motul 8100 X-cess 5w-40.
After warranty, may go with Motul 300V.
