Default R8 Burning on the Gardiner

Was driving eastbound at about 8:15 tonight on the Gardiner. This R8 was massively destroyed from just behind the front door hinge back. Must have been quite the fire. Here's a pic from The Star.

Ok I'll bite, and ask about your experience, and why a 2.5 lb HalGuard fire bottle won't do much? Especially if the firey condition was caught early enough.

I once helped someone put out a power steering fluid fire on a big old American sedan with a 2.5 lb chemical powder extinguisher, only took 3 or 4 short blasts to put the fire out on the side of the highway, the leaking fluid had got on the exhaust manfold and caught on fire, the pressure reading on the extinguisher still stayed in the green section even later that night.

The owner of the car was very thankful, I felt pretty good helping out a fellow motorist, but did not recognize the powder now in the valve of the extinguisher started a slow leak which dropped the pressure to zero within a week, I had to pay for the recharge cost!!

I think I heard it is only the v10's that have had this problem. I wonder if it is too much engine and not ebough space around it?

Bingo. Big/powerful engines in small spaces with insufficient cooling. Check out a Google search of "Supercar Fires":

Appears to happen at low speeds when there's no airflow such as rush hour traffic in Toronto.

I had a fuel fire in my old 951 and the extinguisher only lasted about 30 seconds when opened. not enough to put out a fuel fire. My neibor grabbed his 5 or 7 lber and we used a hose for the rest. luckily very little damage. but made me realize the extinguishers hold very little. really only good for tiny fire or to get you out of the car safely if burning inside.

I carry one too. Its to put me out if I'm on fire when I get out of the car.

If the car is on fire, Im getting out of it and not caring just how much of it is left once it stops smouldering.

That is what insurance is for.
