Here are three quotes:
Automobile Magazine:
"If you've ever driven a Porsche 911, you'll immediately know that the 991 is different. In quantifiable terms, it's leaps and bounds better than any previous 911. It sounds even better, it rides even better, it feels even better, it's even more comfortable, better equipped, and it's far better looking. But if you adored the drive in that 911 because it was a car unlike any other -- because it constantly reminded you that it wanted to kill you, even if it never was going to -- you'll know why the 911 is a better car, but it's not a better 911."
Total 911:
"It is perhaps a turning point for the 911,as for all its unquestioned competence it does feel like it's entering the territory of the true GT car. If that means greater refinement and comfort that's no bad thing, but there's no doubt that it comes at the expense of some of the 911's core driver appeal"
John Simister , Daily Telegraph:
'Objectively the new 911 is outstanding, but part of a 911's appeal has always been its streak of demanding imperfection. That's why I'd sooner snap up an almost-new 997 GTS while I still can. I never thought I'd consider a simple handbrake lever a bringer of joy, but I do now."
It makes me a bit nervous, the whole move-towards-GT thing. Of course there will be great performance and more luxury, but unlike the last major introductions where the Press universally raved about the cars, (even if previous gen owners, as usual, had reservations), but this one is not getting quite the same unqualified reception.
Reminds me of the BMW E 60 and F10 M5s which on paper were massively better than the E39. Yet, the E39 was the universal 'best performance sedan" for years, and never equalled that status again.
Of course its going to be a huge success and for a first time 911 owner will be wonderful. Still........I just have a slightly queasy feeling..........

Coming soon to a dealer near you: The 2020 Porsche 911!

It took a little longer than expected within Porsche, but the 911 has finally been replaced with a luxurious GT car.

This first 991 will be the volume leader for this model. It, along with Cajun's and Cayenne's will fund the other performance oriented one-off's that enthusiasts love and lust after.
These guys have to make money. Pandering to the lowest common denominator with a more GT-ish car and selling shed loads, is going to put money in the coffers.
The true enthusiast who wants a visceral, connected driving experience may not go for this car. The 991 GT3, GT3 RS, GT2, et all will fit the bill.
Don't feel too queasy yet Ronan. This is not your 991. The one you want is still a few years away. And if the early pics are anything to go by, it will be epic.

For me the 997 turbo in stock form was too GT-ish, the 991 will probably be more of the same. That being said the 991 platform is very capable, 7:40 at the ring, which is as fast as a GT3. The 991 GT3RS will be epic!

Sounds like pretty much every review of every generation since the 3.2 Carreras. Each subsequent generation is hailed for its improved performance, while still improving luxury and comfort, yet derided for its diminished soul, feel, connection, etc.
I've driven most of them, and it is definitely true, for the most part, but they're still awesome cars. I have every intention of picking up a 997 when prices come down to earth. But I'll always have the 72. Best of both worlds, I suppose. Though I'll tell you that "soul" starts to lose its lustre on a 30+ degree day, or when the damn thing won't start yet again.

Zookie is dead on but here's another less than glowing one for the list:

I have it on good authority though that the next GT3 will be "insane"...
