Recall Clearance Letter
In the process of negotiating a Pcar on the other side of the border I have requested the seller attain a recall clearance letter for the car.
He called his dealer.
They directed him to Porsche USA.
They said that he cannot request the letter but that once I import the car into Canada, that I can bring it to a Pdealer and for $500 they will Canadianize it, safety it and give me the Letter.
True or not?
I vote very untrue.
I think what will happen is that they'll charge me $500 for the letter and many thousands in BS costs for Canadianizing it, and they wont give me the letter unless I do it all through them.
What are the facts?

Have him ask the dealer for a letter from the service manager stating that the car has no open recalls or open campaigns. The dealer that did the service for my cars PO did that and emailed it to me at his request (send me a PM if you want to see a copy of it). I would try very hard to get it from the current US dealer servicing the car, then there is no need to take it to a Pcar dealer here.
What year and model is the car? What if anything does it need to pass the RIV, (Canadianize)? I needed DTRL (hack $3.00) and an air bag sticker (from Chry $24.00)

No recall letter or no campaign letter can be provided from the dealer! Ask them for one and ask them to stamp it and attach a business card from the manager and that's all you need.

Called Downtown Porsche in Toronto and they confirmed that it is $500 for the safety, etest, CDNization and the Recall Letter, plus another $312 for fog light hookup for DRLs.
Not the best, but that is way better than I expected...Im still going to try to get PPIing dealer to do the letter, but this doesnt look like a dealbreaker to me.
Am I missing something? Will they grind me once the car is here?

Things might have changed in the last couple of years, but when I bought mine up from Buffalo, all I had to do was call Porsche NA and request the recall letter. If I recall properly, they sent one to me no charge.

All the above hinges on the vintage of the vehicle you intend to import...since this is a '993' forum I am assuming it is within the '95-'98 range.

I've imported 2 996's into Canada, the first time 3 years ago I called Porsche NA and they just sent me a letter, the 2nd time they would not do that anymore so I asked a dealer for a printout of their screen saying there are no outstanding recalls and this worked fine.

With any US car it is always good to get a PPI (I would even suggest it as mandatory)
When you pay for a PPI at a dealership they seem more akin to provide something. And you get a low down on condition of the car.
Under the rules of RIV there are 3 forms of acceptable clearance letter:
1)Headquarters Recall letter
2)A typed up letter with company letterhead from delership that states no open recalls signed by any authorizing signer at the dealership eg. Service Manager, Part Mgr, General Mgr (this is what I got and this is usually free)
3)Printed output from manufacture database from Manufacturer that car has no open recals (I got this too somehow)
