Default Windshield Replacement - Cash vs. Insurance

My apologies in advance if this has been covered elsewhere on RL however I couldn't locate such. DD needs a new windshield and deciding between going through ins. or paying out of pocket. There is only a $100 delta between deductible and replacement cost. I understand there is no impact on rates however I have a hard time getting my head around such. Any input is greatly appreciated. Thanks...

rates may not go up, but could risk losing a claims free discount - worth looking at how this could impact discounts or time to achieve future discounts

Never mind your rates, how about diminished value your car having a report on the carproof? It's just glass, but it will still show as a mark on the history.

Thanks gents - looks like I'll go for the out of pocket option even though I'm planning on driving the car to the graveyard (12 year old Volvo wagon although with plenty of life left in it). Cheers...

I don't think windshield is considered a claim (from my experience)
why not save the $100, we pay enough in insurance

I just re-read this. What's the difference between rates going up and losing a claims-free "discount"? Insurance is a racket.

Replacement is. Repair is not.

Absolutely, and many (most) people would agree. But a mark on the carproof will ultimately lower the value for many people. Certainly from a dealer perspective it does.

I would pay for it out of my own pocket instead of going thru the insurance . I personally prefer to have a clean record, just can't trust no insurance company. My wife and I own 5 cars and if they decide to jack up the premium, it will not be pretty. One of her cars was damaged by the hail storm last week and we decided not to make a claim.

I thought the hail was too small to cause any damage last week. the cars I saw did not get damaged. what kind of car does she have? must be really thin metal...guessing Hyundai? I saw a honda that was exposed and no damage...usually cars with thin metal get dinged but last year german cars were damaged.

Just got my quote for the 993 from Mark Motors in Ottawa, 1425.00 for the glass alone, another 100.00+ for seals etc., estimate on labor 325.00, plus taxes...comes to just under 2,100.00.

The 996 glass must be MUCH cheaper than the 993 version...I'm planning a trip to Syracuse to a specialty shop recommended by another RL'er. Still the glass is 1150.00 for OEM, plus, plus. But at least I know the pockets will be cleaned and sealed properly, ( having the rears done at the same time with new seals ), and should still come out well ahead of the local shop price. Oh, plus one night at the local hotel...

Plus gas, plus miles on your car (un-enjoyable freeway miles)

So, you will breakeven.
