Like the m96/97 engine, the "GT1" engine is not totally immune from internet hysteria: https://rennlist.com/forums/996-turb...-concerns.html

Midnight Cayman: I spotted that X50 Cab also. Does look interesting but I am probably looking for a fixed roof. But you're right, thats a special car.
Re Car Enthusiast. I love this one but Im unsure about the interior. I would need to see it - plus it seems a bit expensive.

If it was a tenth as common a problem as the Internet claims it is, PAG wouldn't be as profitable as it is today nor would it regularly be named the most reliable brand by JD Power and Associates. This isn't some massive cover-up; there are plenty of checks and balances and OEMs are often forced to recall and repair vehicles. The M96/97 was in production for more than 10 yrs yet this epidemic of catastrophic failures (according to chat forums) completely escaped federal scrutiny? Reading some of the posts and theories presented, you'd think that PAG was also responsible for JFK, Enron and other conspiracies!
Forum post are not objective since people don't usually come on to post about reliability but rather about problems. As great as rennlist is, only a very small percentage of total Porsche owners are even aware that it exists.

I hear ya on the Internet Phil, but Excellence Magazine? Also, why would Porsche not publish the numbers if they were small, and extend warranties? Nothing to loose and lots to gain. It would be a relatively cheap way of countering the impression many have that it is a widespread problem. It might also help support the crashing H2O cooled prices.

Porsche has always been very secretive and the plunging values of the 996/997's have more to do with supply and demand and very little to do with the very small number of owners that participate in online forums and fuel the fears. Many many more 996 were built than any previous generation and even more 997's will have been produced than 996 when production switches to 991.
