I've spent some time looking through various topic searches, on rennlist, about track data systems. I've been exposed to Traqmate and Race Keeper and expect to purchase a system.
Are there any users in the GTA that can comment on their personal experience with these units. Where did you buy? Dealer support available? Would you buy again? Did you spend more $$$$ on unexpected upgrades?
Lots of comments through a search on this subject, but not much from any GTA users...
Talk to your track day friends. Three friends of mine with BMW M3s all use Traqmate so they can exchange data files. This way they all learn from each other.
I'd be up for a group buy on the AIM. I was going to wait until next spring but if there are few guys wanting to do it now....i'm sure I could spring it.
We use the Video VBox for video & data logging and there is a great support system. If you just want simple data logging you can look at the Performance Box. You can get them directly through us or Mantis. On our website is more info. Let me know if you want some sample data or have questions.
Think carefully about what you want to get from the system and how far you want to take it.
I have the ultra-simple MaxQData GPS system (10Hz) and it's fine for most people. All it has is gps-based speed and g-loading. No throttle position. No brake position. No steering input. No RPM.
...but when I had it running when my driving coach was driving as well as when I was driving, I can compare data from each of our best laps and see what's going on. This tells me that a pro driver isn't braking as hard before a turn (he goes into the corner about 3-5mph faster than me). He carries more speed through the turn and at the end of a straightaway, he can be as much as 6mph faster than me. Add this up over a whole lap and you have a lot of time left on the table.
At my current level of driving, I really don't need much more. Once I can get closer to him then I could benefit from throttle position, brake position, etc. In some cases it would be good to see exactly how he trailbrakes into a corner....but many folks won't ever need that.
Think carefully about what you want and then pick the system that will give you those features (either now or be expandable for future use). Be sure to check out the software too. Many firms have downloadable software you can check out with sample data. Since you'd be spending so much time analyzing the data, choose a firm that has good software. You don't want to get pissed off trying to analyze what the driver is doing in a corner because that's why you want this data logger in the first place!
