Default Does anyone have a code reader?-my first CEL

Here we go- my first Cel.

1 Started the car, and it accelerated, all by itself, two quick times,
up to 2500 RPM or so, - never saw that before!! Never heard of it either!

2. Backed off slowly from the garage, as always.

3. Put in first gear and noticed accelerator does not work! press a few times,
no response at all. I noticed idling varying up and down slightly!

4. Because I was already rolling forward in first gear, I stepped on the
accelerator a little harder- it chocked over and over, (as if I was stalling
by letting the clutch go too fast- not the case)

5. Shut down car, and restart- same behaviour!!

6. Drive very slow (still no accelerator) back to garage and shut off engine.

7. Restart engine, and Cel comes on steady. Shut down engine.

I looked around, and all liquids look fine, no leaks.

Does anyone have a code reader in this area?

Wondering if to take it to Dealer or Indy in the morning.
S#*%*t!!

PS
Sorry for cross-posting from the 996 forum.

Never heard of it. I assume your car is post mechanical throttle - it sounds like a throttle sensor of some sort. Not something I'd screw around with. Sounds very dangerous.

Well I don't know the 993 very well but it does sound like somewhat like a massive vaccum leak and oyur car is trying to compensate.
I don't know how much room the 993 has but i would tak eoff what i can and look for cracked hoses and check out he nechanical linkages.

If your not mechanically inclined get her towed to Courtney or Hunter Motorsports. Or any other reputable shop. Bet they will have it diagnosed quickly.
I think the code reader isn't going to tell you much other than youa re WAY to lean or way to rich. It may tell you if you are having a misfire but I think a lot of that is obvious anyway .

Long time don't see!
It is a 996, not a 993.
I am definitely not too rich, maybe a touch lean... oh wait

great .. I know the 996 even less

and i think you have WAY more crammed in their ...

does sound like fuel metering or air delivery though. I know coil packs are a real issue on 996s but really you would just be guessing. May not hurt to have a look at them though . if they are cracked and busted you need new ones anyway.

You don't hear of many problems on this in our group on 996s . When we have BOTH have been coil pack issues.

When my coils went it I was hitting about 5000 rpm in 2nd bear and wamo. The power just died and the check engine light came on. Ended up that 3 coils where misfiring, the car felt like I was driving a 944, I would press the throttle and get very little response, the engine did idle fine though.

Jumper, that last part is very similar. Iling is varying up and down slightly, though.

Well if it your coils. Mine ran around $1700 at and independent mechanic to replace all 6 of the coils, tubes and sparc plugs.
All of them were extremely cracked and rusted. My 6 month old sparc plugs installed at the dealer during its major service had to be all replaced because the installed them into those terrible coils.

If it's not your coils and say its only your MAF, then it's a much cheaper and easier to do. Anyways I just took it easy and drove mine in to my mechanic.
