Default OT- Mazda RX-8

Need your help gang.....

A friend of mine at work is having problems with her 2004 Mazda RX-8.
She bought the car last year and has been taking it to her local Dealer.(west end of the City).

She has completed all the warranty recalls and still she is having problems ...
She has been getting the run around from the dealer and continues to have issues with the car.

Here is the latest .... Car died twice when it came to a stop. She was able to restart the car... battery light flashed the first time and second time engine, battery and oil coolant light flashed and then the car died. It was after a 20 min. ride both times.

Can any one suggest a better dealer or an indy that can help her out. She loves the car and wants to keep of course, but hates the fact that she can't rely on it getting her home safely very night....

Any help would be great appreciated.

Let me guess, both times were on hot days? Rx-8's have problems with running hot, the cats get very hot and the computers say nuh-uh to starting. There is a tech procedure to over-ride this , put the gas pedal allllll the way down and turn the key.

Is your friend the girl in your Avatar. If so I may be of some service!

Good luck to her though. My wife never had any luck with her Mazda when she had it.

+1 Brad is right on the money on this one.
I had to do that on my RX7 too.
These were some of the signs to get the engine rebuilt.

Being an RX-7 owner, I can tell you that i just needed my cat replaced and engine rebuilt, but I can't imagine that happening on an RX-8. My RX-7 is a 1993 with 98K on it. The one shop in the city that really understands and specializes in Rotary engines is called Mazdees and the guys name is Dave Diedrick. 905-619-8813.

It's actually a problem with RX-8's, we had to warranty/recall a lot of them and I forget what was in the recall but I know that the cats were one of the things.

So tell her to book an appointment and get checked for warranties etc.

+1 for Dave Diedrick, he's been around Mazdas for a long time, great race driver and fellow Jamaician as well.

I was under the impression that the rotarries are not rebuldable.

Sure they are... a simplier design than a normal engine but you gotta know what your doing with apex seals and the clearances. Dave Diedrick was with Canjam Racing before and I believe they were doing rebuilds for some of the dealers.

I believe Omar knows them as well.

sorry if I wasn't too clear. I know about he apex seals and their replacement. What I meant was, if the seals wear down (not caought early) and the rotor digs in, the engine is not rebuildable after that. Is this right? Unlike piston engines, you can't "bore out" and trully rebuild a rotarry, can you?
