But a bunch of states, NY, FLA, maybe CA - have abstract reciprocity - so anything you do here - WILL show up on your US record - so you have to choose your state carefully.

Tony McGrath (infamous 90's road racer) used this very strategy with great success - using a Tennesse license I think.

If Zook gets the right lawyer, he will get off and not have to worry about this.

Zook fight the power. As mentioned previously, most charges get thrown out when challenged.

What an absolutely stupid law.

Sorry to hear that Zook, sucks big time. So easy to slip over that magic 150 on the 400 series of highways. Pretty high success rate in getting these charges thrown out though ... good luck! Keep us posted.

It's still a win-win for that Napoleonic douche bag Fantino though. If you don't fight it, your minimum fine is $1000 plus the impound/towing (another $1000), alternative transportation for a week ($100-400) and the added insurance premium for the next few years ($$$).
Fighting it successfully you'll still have to pay the impound/towing ($1000), the taxis for a week ($100-400), your lawyer ($2200), time off work for a court appearance ($$$ if you run your own business).
So win or lose, the system still manages to fleece you of $3000-4000 minimum! Innocent until proven guilty?...yeah right.

Why is it that if you win the case and are found innocent the OPP isn't footing the bill for towing/impound? Certainly in a civil matter, If I sue someone for something frivolous, they can recoup legal fees and disbursements from me, as well as damages. These rules are in place so that lawsuits aren't launched frivolously, needlessly tying up our legal system. I would think the police would have to play by the same rules, no? If I incurred costs of $3000+ for a charge I got off on, I'd certainly be suing the police force.

I think they need to change the saying on Ontario license plates from 'Keep it Beautiful" to "Policing our People". If I were running for office, my entire campaign would be around revamping the entire highway traffic act.

1. Train drivers properly and have mandatory refresher courses (This is the big one as far as i am concerned)
2. Change the speed limit to reflect the realistic capabilities of drivers and cars
3. Provide outlets for street/drag racing (This will not stop it on our roads because as long as guys have testosterone, they will race on the streets. It may reduce it however)
4. Make winter tires mandatory
5. Propose that police officers spend more time fighting real crimes and less on abusing the good citizens of the road
6. Completly rewrite the highway traffic act. A lot of things have changed since it was written
7. Look to the best traffic systems in the world to help properly revamp ours
8. Make the punishment reflect the crime. If you are speeding, I won't call it street racing

Justin, you'd never get elected on that platform. First, those things cost money to implement, second, they don't affect enough people directly, or at least according to their own perception. Politicians get elected on sexy platforms that may or may not have an actual impact - things like lowering the gst 2%. Many people think the road system works fine, except for "those punk kids", and they don't really care about the reality of the situation, so long as someone is saying they're working to change things that fits within their own narrow world view.

A population gets the gov't it deserves. <sigh>

edit: this isn't to say that I don't agree completely with what you're suggesting, just saying that with the way people vote, it'd never fly. May as well try to sell a carbon tax

We got plenty of good laws already and if they were properly enforced I'm sure the speed limits on the 400 series could go up to a 125 or so.
