thanks Webbie! You were in the advanced group and I guess that was you in the white Cayman S, right? Sounded good blasting past the pits!
you're right, that race 'vette was insane. I was also very impressed with the box stock BMW M5 with SMG in our group...if he was anywhere near my butt in the back straight, my only option was to wave him by...geez that thing is fast!

Hey Webbie, didn't know there was another rennlister there yesterday - sorry, I would've introduced myself. My dad and I were sharing the black C6 Corvette (non-Z06) and the seal grey 996 turbo, both in the novice group. This was my first real track experience driving anything other my 72 911T (I've done a few laps in other cars, but not a full event). The Corvette was cool, gobs of HP, but crappy tires and brakes - I had the ABS going at pretty much every turn. The 996 turbo on the other hand... all I can say would be a string of expletives. That car does what you ask of it, when you ask, doesn't complain and asks for more. While the C6 is comfortable and capable, it's truly a cruiser. The suspension is soft, there's very little feedback in the wheel, and it doesn't feel that stable. The 996 steering wheel is like plugging a sensor into your palms - there's so much information there.

Of the 6 runs, I did the 1st 3 in the vette and the last 3 in the 996. At the end of the first session with the 996 (my 4th of the day) my instructor said I'd cut 7 seconds off my lap time from my best lap with the vette, which would've brought me into the low 1:50s (my best vette lap was around 2:00). He didn't time any more the rest of the day, but I had the video camera running so I can get a rough time from that. Unfortunately the way I had it rigged up I didn't notice the zoom lever was being pressed, so as soon as I turned it on, it zoomed all the way in...

Anyway, it was an absolutely kick-*** day. I had SO much fun, though truth be told I can't say my old 911 is any less fun. It's slower, but it doesn't seem it. I saw the digits 207 on the speedo very briefly before cresting the back straight (whereas in the 72 I'm doing MAYBE 170, and that's with a tailwind ) but it just doesn't feel that fast. Or maybe the older car feels faster than it really is.

Anybody coming out next Thursday? (27th) It's the last brg day of the season - I'm hoping to be there!

Christian, if you get a good exit at 5b and c you should easily do a lot more than 207 in the tt... heck I hit +220 in my 951. what gear are you in? reason I ask is I use 4th in the 951 and 5th in the tt but hit redline before the flagging station.

Highlight of the day, blew by the full race-prep vette. That car is so bloody fast. Checked mirror between 1 and 2, nothing in sight. By the time I enter 3, I heard some strange noise, check mirror, nothing. Look to the right, sure enough, it is there already. Usually I don't check mirror between 2 and 3 and now I should correct my "bad habit".

If I am not mistaken, today is accident free.

pongobaz: you were doing great out there, too bad we are not off the track at the same time. May be next time.
I am confused did you pass the vette or he pass you? what are you driving?

210 in my 993. Do you downshift to 2nd gear in turn 5? If you do, don't and leave it in 3rd gear and keep the rev above 2700 rpm (this will force you to carry more speed into turn 5) and I can guarantee you that you will hit 220+ at the end of the back straight.

Of course the vette passed me. He is 1:20 guy, may be even lower. I am in the Cayman S.

Don't get me wrong, I could easily get the 996TT well north of 207. I just simply don't have the ***** yet! I'm not yet used to driving a car at those speeds, even at the track (remember, I'm used to a 2.4L engine that's never been running 100%). At the top of the back straight, the car didn't feel planted over 200. My instructor noticed it too. It could be that I'm not used to the turbo boost and how it reacts to throttle changes, though we both thought it just simply felt windy up there. Whatever it was, until I'm much more used to that car, its braking, and pushing my comfort zone for entry to 8, 207 is plenty fast for me!

FTR, I'm doing all of 5 in 3rd. As I get more used to the car and how it takes 5, I'll downshift to 2nd between 5a and b, or perhaps do all of 5 in 2nd. (In my 72 I downshift to 2nd between 5a and b). I'm sure I could get much more jump out of 5b in 2nd. As it was yesterday, 3rd coming out, 4th after the first hill, 5th after the 2nd, didn't bother with 6th. Downshift to 4th for 8. My exit speed of 5b was usually around 80 km/h, entry speed for 8 was 130ish. Interestingly, I enter 8 at almost the same speed in the 72, and with both cars I know they can do more. It's all about the cajones

Oh yeah, my instructor was Dario (sp?). He was driving the older track-prepped white BMW 3 series. REALLY nice guy, and a good instructor. Pretty much the first thing he asked me was what I wanted from him - I really appreciate that, because at this point in my driving what I need is to just drill, like doing scales on piano. I know the line, I know what I'm doing right and when I screw up, but I like having a coach, and I'm not quite comfortable going out solo yet.

Interestingly enough, when I crashed my 72 last year, he had some wire and helped me wire up the mangled bumper piece so I could drive home, then took me out for a couple laps in his NSX. Damn, that's a fast car. And he's a really good driver, too.

Well, I checked out the in-car video I did in the 996. I actually got a good mounting spot on the clip bracket for the passenger side sun visor, if you can believe that. Problem is, I ran out of tape early in the 2nd of 3 sessions, and on the 3rd session I didn't notice it but the zoom lever got caught, so as soon as I turned it on it zoomed all the way in! So I've got lots of blurry closeups of the trees around the perimeter of Mosport, if anyone's really into botany...

Anyway, it was interesting to time the laps and watch the #s change - even with the zoomed in blurry stuff, I could see the Continental and Pirelli overpasses, so I could get a rough lap time. My best lap of the day was about 1:51, down from about 2:00 earlier on. I think I might have had a couple laps that were even better towards the end of my 2nd session (after the tape ran out) but who knows. Good to have a baseline I can work from, though.

I'll transfer some video tomorrow and post it to youtube.

BTW, if anyone's interested in doing this, I can provide details as to how I set it up - it's just a regular home camcorder, some zip ties and paper towel. Takes about 5 minutes.

be careful. if not mounted properly can become a projectile if an incident occurs. I use a harness bar with a camera mount in the 951. I am looking for a breykhouse one for the 993.

Mauro in the yellow 997 S, was using one of these things: http://www.filmtools.com/gripsuccupca.html to mount his camera on the windshield...his instructor didn't have a problem with it at all. Good deal at $91 USD or... wait $91 CAD!

Hey, thanks for that link - I've been keeping an eye out for one of those. There was a long thread on Pelican a while ago where someone suggested suction cup mounts, but the only ones I found looked really flimsy.

I do understand the possibility of the camera becoming a projectile in an incident (did anyone read Alon's article in Provinz about his accident on the 407 and his blackberry clocking him in the head?). I guess it's part of the risk that I'm willing to take by driving at the track. The 996TT is my dad's, so I think if I smucked it up I'd be more what he would do to me than what a flying camera might!

(ftr my instructor didn't have a problem with it either)
