hoffa, I think I saw your car in the classifieds when I looked up 02s - is it yours? If so, your price is right in line with comparable US cars. ryehigh, if you're ok with targa instead of cabrio, check that one out.

That's odd, sent it 20 minutes ago?
Well as Christien said.. mines the one in Autotrader right now, priced in the right area I think. You can see the ad there if you want (look for an 02 Silver on Black one with a 519 phone number). Asking mid to low 50s.

You may also want to try Weissach in Vancouver (www.weissach.com) if you can't find the right car here. I can vouch for their quality levels as they only sell the best examples of the various models. I'm sure they can arrange transport of the vehicle to you.

Christien....exchange today is 7%....when you count 6% duty and 6 % GST why not count the forex ?
Also, freight can be $1-3K........plus fees, don't underestimate the cost of landed cars.

I've had a great experience at DFC with 2 new car purchases, so I can't comment directly on pre-owned. However, there is ALWAYS room to maneuver on pricing. Every day the car sits on their lot, it's costing them money. Make a reasonable offer and be prepared to walk if they don't budge.

I used TFX to ship my car from FL. They did all the paperwork and border crap. It was as easy as pie, and is delivered to your house.
Find a car you like, get a PPI and take a Saturday to fly down for a test drive and to meet the owner. That's what I did, and will do next time, ceteris paribus.

Rye, I wouldn't call it a hobby, but the search is fun. Between my father and myself, we've now imported 3 Porsches, an 02 996 turbo, a 99 boxster and an 83 944. The 944 and boxster were both found on Pelican, and the turbo was sourced through Manheim auctions through a local dealer friend. The turbo has turned out to be an awesome car, low mileage and at the time a steal of a price, though since the 996 market has dropped so much we'd probably be lucky to break even if it were sold today. The boxster was a gem of a find - an absolutely pristine beauty, loaded with options. It was too nice a car to keep (I like to drive the hell out of cars) so I sold it just a few months ago. The 944 was bought intending to strip it and make it a track car, but it turned out to probably need too much work to be safe, so now I use it as a winter car.
As YYC mentioned, there are a few other costs involved, depending on what the exchange rate is the day you buy, and what shipping company you choose. Shipping can vary widely depending on the company and where the car's coming from, but generally is around the $2000 mark. There are also a couple small fees at the border - $200 AC charge, RIV charge, nothing major.
I wrote up a primer on importing:

A lot to read, but will give you all the basics.
The total time involved in the process, not including the search, is probably 15-20 hours, assuming everything goes smoothly (I'm 2 for 3 in that dept. The boxster was a nightmare and started my hate-on for CDN Porsche dealerships. Of course, I prevailed in the end!). That includes preparing all your documents, closing the deal, finding and hiring a shipping company, transferring funds, faxing the border, calling to make sure everything's in place, then once the car's here doing the safety, e-test and RIV inspection and going to the ministry to transfer title and buy plates. Basically doing everything yourself except the shipping.
