He's also now a Rennlist member & that's hardcore.

Hey Brad: You should join us on a run or two next summer. You can run point . . . Copper (Pelican) led a SW Ontario run 2 years ago. We had a blast & I swear he had a stoplight fiddler (he didn't) because we got greens everywhere . . .

Iceman
Actually my work vehicle usually gets people to do the look straight ahead and say to themselves " don't make eye contact, don't make eye contact" sort of thing. :-)

Rod,

Let me pose a question here for everyone, but particularly anyone in traffic law enforcement. I was driving into Toronto the other day, and coming around a bend in the QEW saw a cruiser on the right shoulder, presumably with a radar gun (for anyone that knows the area this was just as the highway bends to the left (eastbound) just as you come up to the Ford plant). Traffic was moving at about 120-130, as usual in this area (speeds tend to pick up because a lot of traffic is getting off for the 403) but of course all of a sudden you see a ton of brake lights as people are slowing down.

This got me thinking - here's a speed trap that is supposedly there to keep traffic moving more slowly and thus more safely, but this speed trap was quite clearly creating an extremely dangerous situation by 'encouraging' people to slow down very quickly, in a curve, where a lot of people are changing lanes to get to the 403 exit. Then as I drove on I got to thinking that maybe speed traps in general create more dangers than they solve.

I've become a lot more safety-conscious since I started track driving 3 years ago, and the first thing you learn at the track is to look where you want the car to go. In fact, I remember them teaching me that at Ont. Driving school, back when I was 16. It's pretty common knowledge that the car will go where you look. So if you're always looking to the shoulder for a cop car, your chances of maybe crossing over the lane line and cutting someone off are greatly increased. I know the first answer from the police would be to slow down and then you don't have to worry about it, but I don't really think that's a viable solution when the general flow of traffic on highways like the QEW or the 401 is 120-140. Doing 100 is simply unsafe! Even still, from my own experience, even when you're doing 100 it's still a habit to be watching for cruisers, and you still react when you see one.

So here's a thought, why not bring back photo radar, set it at something reasonable like 120 or 125 and make it very clear that you WILL get a ticket. As I understand it, speed limits were set in a day when cars where technologically primitive, and 100 kmh was fast. I don't think 120 is an unsafe speed at all.

Better yet, why not get more police on the road in unmarked cars (and NOT a jet-black Crown Victoria with no badging that's painfully obviously a cop car!) and ticket the people that are actually causing the problems by not paying attention, weaving in and out, tailgating, etc. Not only would that make the roads safer, but it would mean less traffic jams due to fender benders. If I knew I could stay at 120, not get ticketed and not hit a traffic jam, there'd be no need to go 140!

Sorry for this rant/hijack, we now return you to your regularly scheduled programming...

Hell and I just wanted to know if it was legal to turn left on a red from a one way street to a one way street in HAmilton , just like you can turn right on a red.. I was always just to embarrassed to ask.

As far as I know, it is. We do it all the time here. If it is in fact illegal, I've never been stopped for it. It just makes sense, and keeps traffic moving!
