Default OT: Bungalow within 1.5 hours of Oakville

In a couple of years we plan to sell our Oakville house and downsize to a bungalow. We want to stay within about a 90 minute drive from the GTA, so the kids don’t have an excuse not to visit. If any of you know of a development of newer homes that includes bungalows, I would certainly appreciate hearing the location. I know that places like Grimsby and Beamesville are starting to build bungalows targeted towards retirees, so I suspect there are other developments going up elsewhere.

why not buy some acreage in a place like Schomberg and build what you want?

We’ve built 2 homes and owned 2 other building lots. It is a pretty stressful endeavor and something I’d like to skip if I can find something recently built. My controller is building a home now and has horror stories regarding the quality of the trades available. We struggled with some of the trades back in 2006 when we built this house. I can’t imagine what it’s like now with unemployment where it is. Building is an option though, if we can’t find what we want.

Are neighbors got a place in Collingwood, they love it and will retire there.

Not sure about bungalows however...

Yeah, the fellow that I work for loves Collingwood and suggested it yesterday. I’ve only spent a weekend there, so I’ll have to look around a little.

New developments coming up in Fergus/Elora area. Was there few weeks back and it seems it's growing, nice homes around. Little hub in that area. About 1 hour from Oakville.

While not a bungalow and not downsizing, there's a sweet car enthusiast house for sale just before the Halton landfill. $14M ask. Room for IIRC 90 cars inside, 5000 sq ft auto workshop. The house is decent looking, more modern side of design. Built in last few years.

Thanks. I was looking at some homes in Fergus last night on line and there are some nice ones. I don't think I've ever been up there, so I'll have to take a drive and see what it is like. Another friend recommended Rockton, which is up that way too apparently.

Found one for you, Te He https://www.c21.ca/listing/ON/Raleig...-5J5/195370724

Fergus is cool, nice little downtown and nice hiking/trails near the river.

Hmmm 1.5 hours from Oakville in a couple years, Burlington seems nice lol

NOTL is nice but traffic is brutal on the weekends.

I have worked in the supply end of the residential building industry for around 20 years and have been exposed to trades my entire life.

My dad also used to build homes/cottages and I was the "helper" who constantly brought the wrong tool from the truck.

You're right, the trades aren't what they used to be. After having worked with my dad when I hit my late teens/early 20s I had various jobs in trades with other contractors. Roofing, framing, drywall etc.

On the supply end of things and project management all the plans I see from tract builders are designed to increase population densities. This means bungalows are virtually non-existant in new builds unless it's custom made to suit for the homeowner. Everything is tall and narrow for new turnkey builds. There are some smaller condo/townhouse communities that have been made with retirees/elderly mobility in mind and even they're two storey Example:http://tttholdings.com/lilacs.php .

Your best option is to find an 80s/90s bungalow with a decent sized lot and do minor renovations to suit your needs/update the style.

The Cavan/Bethany area southwest of Peterborough is close to the 115 and less than 1-1/2 hours from downtown Toronto (if traffic is flowing).

I grew up North of Peterborough. There's lots of bungalows that hit the market from time to time that are good value.

The odd new build comes up that's suitable single storey, for example: https://www.realtor.ca/real-estate/2...view=imagelist
