Does he really want to spend $40k on a 20 yr old car? Besides it takes months ie at least 6 as I recall to get it done.

Drive it till it dies and then drop in the LS or sell t as a roller. Because you wont see a cent of that $40k investment back in resale
Is it hard to find a new engine for $35K and I guess the cost of installing it would easily be another $5-10K range

There's a Hartech "re-seller/partner" in Alberta - https://www.alpineautowerks.com/

If you want to send your engine south, we are Hartech’s US partner and have fully replicated their machining and rebuilding capabilities using their processes, CNC programming, training and support. 4.1L builds start at $22.8k.

I recall the $35k price was installed but I did mine about 7 yrs ago so no idea of pricing or availability today (no doubt higher)

With inflation taking a huge hit I am sure it will probably cost over $45K now to replace the engine. Wow $35K back 7yrs ago is expensive too.

What? Someone had to find this funny. I hope I'm not being insensitive with this joke. My apologies if I have.

from articles I have read, you will get a thin film of oil on your rear bumper ( I imagine from exhaust) and this could increase chance of fire, again from exhaust.
was that supposed to be a joke Ronnie? or was this something you heard? cause at first didn't but does make sense, since oil is flammable.
my 951 had an engine fire when the oil filter leaked on to hot exhaust btw.

Danny
My SP2 car had three oil fires , one at Mosport coming out of 5 , i stopped driver’s left as i knew there was a fire truck parked there , and twice at Tremblant !
Invest in a good fire suppression system with one nozzle aimed at the fuel rail, one at the oil filter and another at your feet inside the car !

Cheers
Phil

Both. Oil fire - specifically thought of your situation Danny - and "insurance" fire.

Contrary to the video, bore scoring is unheard of on the 993 and 993tt sites.

Also unheard of in the 928 which had an Alusi block from 78-95. All 928 pistons had the durable iron coating on the piston skirts. They changed that coating and then the problem exploded.

Im not quoting numbers but 45k is absurd. We did a 3.8 shop car there are two places here in Quebec that can reline the blocks. One place is Umatek and the other im finding out soon enough how their work is.

the biggest issue by far is finding a machine shop for crankshafts and heads. Everyone retired during Covid or is retiring now. Last set of 997 3.6 heads I sent out came back less than stellar.. even with oem supplied parts.

Ya, the one shop in my area that had the Sunnen machine to work the Alusi bores is now closed.
