Vehicle Thefts - Some Stats Released Today
#181
So last Tuesday evening I moved my daughter's VW EOS to street parking since we are having concrete work done. I accidentally left the headlights on and a police officer must have driven by that evening and they were attempting to reach me on an old phone number. So they are on the lookout. I guess the MTO does not have my new cell number on file as that would have saved me a dead battery Wednesday morning.
But don't think anyone is targeting old VW EOS's. LOL

Because I was responding to your post with respect to "ruined lives".
Now there is a silver lining here, it seems that killing someone with your vehicle because you feared for your life is now apparently quite legal here.
Carjackers who attempt to pull you out of your car or surround you should take notice...

Our deal with the government is that we pay taxes and do not walk around with full assault armament, and they ensure our safety. The government seems to be defaulting on their end of the deal. But I'd rather have them course-correct than need to buy guns and/or hire a private army, even if the latter is cheaper than paying Canadian taxes.

I'm reminded of being on an airplane coming back from paris where a guy was talking about having been mugged there. This guy was really loud and dressed the same way. I wonder if this had anything to do with him being targeted

Just read in today’s Star that charges withdrawn on the 2 men accused of carjacking Mitch Marner in 2022. The charges were withdrawn in October 2023. The crown stated “there’s not a reasonable prospect of conviction”

it happens. sometimes the police know who did it but the prosecutor decides that there isn't enough admissible evidence to convince a judge or jury. no point wasting time and looking stupid by prosecuting a case that you know you'll lose even if they're guilty as hell, at least in the eyes of the police. not guilty isn't the same as innocent.

Coeur Delene is a city of 50000 people. Not exactly toronto or LA
Its statistics. If you have 50,000 people, you might have. say, 50 violent criminals. You have 5,000,000 you will have 5000
Also, a city of 50,000 is going to be fairly homogeneous. Big cities is where disturbed people go because there are services
Nothing to do with gun laws

Doesn't Singh from Brampton know handguns are banned in Canada?

Canadian stats have shown the smaller the community, the higher the chance of being a crime victim. Port cities are worse than others. US stats are probably the same however, as I recall, they vary by race. Young black males are still more likely to die of gunshot wounds than others. Based on the "news" my impression is disturbed people gravitate to large, liberal cities where laws are not enforced, and social benefits are most generous. A friend who lives in Manhattan says this is certainly true in NYC. Same with downtown Toronto. There is virtually no crime in Cuba because the punishment is somewhat final!

Funny, we moved from Hamilton to Oakville many years ago because it was supposed to be safer. I'm not sure if that is still the case. Can't leave the Lexus in the driveway or it will get stolen. Can't leave the mail in the mailbox overnight or it will get stolen. Need an alarm, cameras, mega lights and 2 big dogs to discourage break-ins. Have to look 100 ways before crossing the street of you'll be run down by a distracted driver doing 80 in a 50

Someone said maybe tax refund cheques? Maybe collecting personal info.

Then again Oakville is a wealthy town so as criminals increase in numbers no surprise with the increase.
As far as refund cheques or personal info why only certain boxes and not all?
Seems odd but you're quite right on all counts, cameras, situational awareness, door reinforcement locks, etc...
