id be fairly certain a lot of your gas you are putting in your car is not ethanol free , you just think it is.. i bet its just a matter of updating the stickers on the pumps .. shell guy driving the tanker i dont think drives to this one that has no ethanol , skips that one coz it has ethonol etc. he just drives around to all when they run out and starts filling the tanks.

See @reacp911's posts on page 2. Get a graduated measuring cylinder, add an exact quantity of gasoline, add an exact quantity of water and shake well. Let it sit and when it settles look at the line between the gas and the water. If you started with 100ml gas and added 20ml water, and you now have 30ml water at the bottom and 90ml of gas on top, the gas had 10% Ethanol. If you still have 20ml of water and 100ml of gas, the gas had no Ethanol.

oh i'm pretty sure i'm not doing that at every shell station i stop at before filling up. lol.
especially since what's in the hose to the trigger is whatever last guy filled up with.

LOL... no, it's not exactly instantaneous nor something you can do at the pump before you fill up every time. For the time being the sticker on the pump will tell you, but pretty soon the vast majority of them will say "Contains up to 10% Ethanol".

In the meantime, I'm just going to believe what it says at the pump, test if suspicious and keep tanks topped up to minimize the ingress of air. I've already replaced all the fuel lines on one of my cars with modern FI hoses. The other I will do before spring.
Your point about the couple of litres in the pump hose is valid. If I can, I will fill up after the most high end car filling up at the station.

I'm waiting for @RDMcG to report back with what Shell responds to his letter with.

all modern cars can handle ethanol no problem and are designed for it. Us guys with the older cars have reason for concern with metal tanks, and sensitive components not designed for ethanol in fuels and can be subject to corrosion.

This old guy has a cool idea...
We have a lot of the 18L water jugs in the summer for the cottage.... I might start using this method for the home power equipment.

While the separation method works, keep in mind that the Ethanol is used as an octane booster and that the gas that you'll be left with is likely going to be well below 87 octane. It may not be an issue in a lawn mower or a chain saw, but any engine that requires a certain octane level in order to prevent knocking / pinging / detonation will definitely suffer as a result. In other words, I would not use that in the Porsche.
