Stunt Driving

The most common aerospace Ti alloy has 1/4 to 1/5 the hardness of stainless steel. It's not that hard to cut if you don't care about the quality of what's left over (part and tool). I think you're confusing this with tungsten carbide (WC), which is somewhere in the top-10 hardest known substances. I think only boron nitride with a particular crystal structure and diamond are harder. However, WC is brittle, so you can shatter it off (sometimes these rings shatter by accident when dropped) with vise grips.

I was relaying what the paramedics and doctors at various tracks I've raced at have told me. I am sure you are correct - but metallurgy is probably not their forte, and I'd rather not risk losing a finger so I take both rings off before getting in the race car rather than relying on a paramedic or ER doctor knowing what a ring is made of should the unthinkable happen. The gist of my previous comment was that it's marriage, not engineering that could end up being more detrimental to one's well-being.

I am just reading this bill that they are attempting to pass on stunt driving. The 40km/h part is just one stupid part of it.
roadside vehicle impoundment doubles from 7 to 14 days
roadside license suspension from 7 to 30 days
escalating post-conviction license suspensions
1) minimum 1-3 years
2) minimum 3-10
3) lifetime (potential to reduce)
4) lifetime.
stunt driving expands to beyond roadways. Specifically, they call out parking lots.
so. You’re driving down the road, doing 95 in an 80. It drops to a 50 and you’re a little too slow on the brakes. Boom. Car impounded for 14 days. License gone for 30. If you’re convicted, license gone for at least a year.
doing donuts in the parking lot? Same thing.
did you do both of the above? License gone for 3+ years.
some cop sees you driving next to another sporty car and tries to get you for racing? Lifetime ban from driving. 3 strikes. You’re out.
I’m all for stopping people from doing donuts in busy intersections, or roll races on 400 series highways, or sectioning off streets to drag race, but that’s not what this bill is about.

Maybe they need to stop with the pointless war on speed and start just cracking down on the stupid distracted drivers. The only reason they enforce speed is because it's easy to catch and makes money, it definitely is not making the roads any safer...short of the guy doing 200km/h+ weaving through traffic. Also, if they want to have such strict speed laws, they need to set the speed limits fairly. 100km/h on the 400 series stuff is a complete joke, if everyone does 120km/h+ then that's what the limit should be set at. If it was 40km/h over 120km/h (ie. 160km/h) I'd have less of a problem with this.

If this is really about safety, speed traps should not be set up on bright sunny days hiding by the side of the road, when it is the safest to go fast.
It could be very unsafe to go near the speed limit when it is dark and raining out. You almost never see enforcement under poor driving conditions. I do understand the part about safety of LEOs on the side of the road during inclement weather though.
Speed limits should vary depending on day light or road conditions. This is simply too complicated to implement and enforce. Easier to calibrate your radar gun and call it the day. Harder to prove road conditions.
Take the easy way out.
Make laws that claim it is for safety. Pay lip service.
Enforce it when it is easy for them to enforce.
Then just rake in the fines.
Win win.

That is EXACTLY what i was talking about earlier.. stunting ? throw away the keys i get it ... but speeding ? come on , its way over the top .
Many highways out this way are as you describe . Hwy 7/8 out to goderich is 80 , most cruise passed OPP at 105 and they pretty much leave you alone.. but then there are these tiny towns where it drops to 50 , and if you just get distracted for a second, there can be an OPP sitting just on the other side of the 50 sign ... license gone car towed....
Don't get me wrong, i don't think speeders get a free pass. I think there needs to be punishments for that , but i do believe slower drivers need to keep out of the way and let the OPP deal with the guys who think they have the right to do 150-200+ down the 401.

I think by now most have read comments in another thread from someone who claims to write policy for the Federal Government. I know this is Provincial but do you really expect the logic to be substantially different. Common sense is not a hiring qualification it seems.

I've always felt the fine should be related to the weight of the vehicle.
Minimum fine for motorcycles and throw the book at the dump truck drivers. (especially the one that took out my windshield last week lol)

Have you seen a motorcycle plough into the side of a turning car?

Well I’m going to pile on to the thread
the lack of common sense is frustrating, sure but what I see in Canada and it’s federal and provincial policies is to always cater to the lowest common denominator.
this is why we are where we are with vaccine rollout and lockdowns vs other developed nations
and this is why these types of speeding/stunt driving bills see light of day. limits are being set for the few edge cases and being applied across the board.
