Help me decide - 01 986 S or 09 987.2 Base
Have deposits on two cars and buying one next week. Intend to use as a summer toy
1. 01 Boxster S 6 speed with every option including nav and aerokit, 91,000km. 12.5k
2. 09 987.2 Boxster 6 speed, lightly optioned with 18' Cayman S wheels, Borla Exhaust, mint condition, 45,000km. 30k
Opinions would be greatly appreciated

I still love my 986.1, however.

987.2 because I believe it doesn't have IMS issues. and is newer
I have a '01 986S and I think about the IMS occasionally....
That price you got for the '01 S sounds really good... I have about 140Kkm on my '01 S

I have an '04 986 S, and it is a terrific car.
In this case I would definitely vote for the 987.2. Reasons:
1) 9A1 motor (no IMS, I have a retrofitted IMS in my car, probably something you'd want to do for peace of mind if not already done if you go for the 986, but I'd rather have a 9A1)
2) Newer car + 1/2 the mileage makes 30K an attractive price point IMO
3) 986 interiors are nice if leather, but I prefer the 987 even more.
4) Slightly prefer the styling of the 987 (both are attractive though).
Condition is key though...

Performance is pretty much identical as the 2.9 has about the same hp as the S's 3.2. Interior is much better on the 987. However we are talking a delta of over 17k between the two cars that is pretty huge!
Comes down to budget and your want.

986 got sold from under me. Someone showed up at her door in Calgary and offered 1k more

Ouch, that sucks. Sorry to hear. But look on the bright side. Now you can concentrate on the 987!

dang! I prefer the feel (and yes look) of 986 but certainly a 987 is a great car too (spend enough time in/under them)... '09 base is a good(best?) Boxster engine, 9a1 but still port injected vs DI like rest of line-up

Toy or DD?
I'd rather have $12k in a toy, at 4ooo km/year.
I had 30k in my 997s. It made me smile every day.
But 10 year old car or 17 year old car? There is always the what if factor?
$12k in a car? You have the F'it, factor. its worth more in parts.
Best car i ever had? $24o dollar ford explorer. 29o,ooo kms.
Gave it to a friend, she rolled another 100 k on it.
She put on tire and brakes, and a used muffler.
12k boxter? It will always be worth that.
Service and maintenance would be about the same. I'm sure insurance is about the same.

I see the 986 is gone but I'd still vote for 987.2 base for reasons above (motor, prettier in and out) and they're getting really hard to find... limited supply helps keep prices stable and shows that owners keep them.

Too bad on the 986S.
That was a really good price... I don't know the market in Alberta, but I see a lot listed in the mid teens in my part of Ontario, similar age...
