Default Insurance Question - Kids taking the driving test

So, my daughter is taking here test in the new year. When I put the Porsche into storage I asked the insurance company about what happens when (if) she passes. We have 3 cars and we're going to let her drive just 1 - a VW Touraeg. The other cars are BMW 335i (No!) and the Porsche (and NO!).

Insurance said they would assess her premium as an occasional driver on the BMW as their policy was the insure on the highest risk vehicle. When I asked about just insuring her on the VW they said they wouldn't do that. Then I asked what happens when the Porsche comes out of storage? The response was 'Oh, I see, your not going to let her drive that, we'll have to talk to the underwriters about that...."

So what does everyone do - does your insurance company allow you to restrict a new driver to just one car in the fleet or do you have to insure them as a primary driver on something during the summer months??

I have house, 3 cars all through BelAir - time to shift everything to a new insurer??

When she was home, my daughter was the primary on the Passat, my wife on her BMW, and myself on the Golf. My daughter can drive either of the other two, just like my wife and I can do so, even though we are each primary on one car.
I had no problem putting her on the car of our choosing.
When my daughter is in Ottawa at school, (100Kms away) she becomes a casual driver, not primary.
Porsche is through Hagerty, so that's a no go for her.

FYI
If your daughter is a graduate of a recognized driving school, check to see if your insurer provides a discount. Mine did (Guarantee Company of North America). They also excluded other vehicles. This information may be out of date as he will be 40 shortly.....how did 24 years disappear so quickly?

Went through this 5 years ago. Because we have 3 cars and my daughter being the third driver insurance wanted to make her a primary.
Insurance company (after we complained ) provided a form for her to sign that she would never drive the Porsche and if she did would not be insured. 3 cars , 2 primary drivers and 1 occasional.

Like mentioned above, Insurance company should be able to provide a form for her to sign stating that she will not drive the vehicle, and therefore will not be provided any coverage on said vehicle.

My broker, and my premium provider has worked with all my friends, and their new drivers. I hope they will work with me when my first son get his license in 13 months, 11 days.
If your provider, or broker is not working for you. Go shop. You have the wrong company.
And while your at it ... are you running snow tires on your vehicles? Ask for your discount for running them.
5% helps!

When my son turned 18 my insurance company said he would have to be the primary driver of one of our 3 cars (porsche and two daily drivers). I knew this was NOT the case with a seasonal vehicle so I put the porsche on Hagerty and found a new insurance company. Now hes occasional on 1 vehicle and not allowed in my wifes car. I got different answers every time I called so I dropped them completely and went with a different company.

The form everyone speaks of is a simple waiver that specifies which car the son/daughter is allowed or not allowed to drive. This absolves the insurance company of any liability someone might try to direct their way.
