A '911' with a mid-engine architecture is not a 911. If such a product reaches production it needs a different name.

It will be a stellar performer, but... A '911' with a mid-engine architecture is not a 911. It will need a different name.

Heck of an admission to make: "its 911 had a problem—its weight distribution, with the engine far in the back, makes the asphalt eat voraciously through the tires." But I suppose it's a known quantity by now.

Engineering "With the new RSR, Porsche has essentially turned the 911 into a mid-engined car. The engine is positioned just in front of the rear axle instead of behind it. That’s where the sequential six-speed gearbox now resides. This allows for far more efficient airflow through the rear diffuser. As a result, the new 911 RSR generates more downforce, and at the same time, the drag coefficient suffers less than it would have from bigger wings. "

Looked like a 911 but it was not a 911.

I understand fully well why PAG needs a mid-engine car in the GTLM series, but call it something else - 910...

A 911 has the engine in the rear, quirks et al. Yeah, I know the new customers are after 'balanced' cars and lack the skill to drive a true 911. Tonight's Jay Leno Garage episode featured P. Dempsey complaining that a '73 RS was understeering (he meant difficult to drive). That car flies driven by W. Röhrl.

A 981.1 Cayman in a 911 body. The next version will be a 4-cylinder, plus a few electric motors.

who cares? I'm sure it will drive and handle well.

Move the engine forward. rear engined is a crappy design anyway.

^ Technically the Corvettes are mid-engined cars as the engine sits between the front wheels and the rear wheels. However, if you're referring to when GM will position the engine behind the driver, well according to most if not all the automotive publications, at least on variant of the next gen Corvette (C8) will have the engine placed aft of the passenger compartment.

Good question. It can't be too long before a 2015/2016 RSR shows up.
