I cannot recall how many engines I've seen damaged from people forgetting they have only water in their race car (or boat motor) and put out for winter storage.

So do most race cars use water instead of coolant these days? Is water as good as coolant in keeping the engine cool? I understand the downside of having coolant dumped on the track.

Water is actually better than anti-freeze at cooling cars, you need to add a lubricant/corrosion inhibitor though. For a batt charger make sure you get a float charger or maintainer, not just a trickle charger.
Don't forget the rat poison.
Im in TX as well and have cars with no A/C so they get summer storage, well actually neglect for 2 months. I'm taking my racer Soling sailboat out of the water this weekend since it has dropped into the *80's, LOL. I can stand wet, I can stand the cold but I can't stand to be cold AND even slightly wet.

If it's a track only car, I would think you can help the battery drain by flipping the electric cut off switch?

one item not noted, if the car has a Coolshirt system or something similar, I would think you would want to ensure the fluid by the motor has a heavy concentration of the system "additive" (which I think is a type of alcohol. the lines can surely take the 10% expansion due to freezing, but I would think the motor and the fittings can't. Thoughts? experience?

Yes, mandatory in some series. I use distilled water and redline water wetter. The shop used some other additive last flush, I can't remember the name.

so for those that winter their car in the trailer, do you jack the trailer up off the tires? seems like it would be a good idea, but I really don't want the visual of the trailer sitting on blocks in my driveway.

I put my trailer on jack stands and cover the tires.

How do you guys secure the trailer from being easy pickings and stolen? Hitch lock? Chain? Denver boot?

My 22 foot enclosed has sat on its tires in the winter for 5 years no problem.
Agree with appropriate coolant and trickle charger. Some people also recommend using fabric softener sheets in various places to keep rodents away.

These are general winter storage issues (incl garage). I've had success with peppermint oil dripped on cotton *****.
