You have to look at the displacement you begin with. There is no replacement for displacement.

The 951 is very moddable but the HP potential plateau's at around 400. after that it becomes much more expensive to develop more hp and keep it reliable.

I see lots of ads and articles about 600 and 700+ hp 911 turbos, and these cars are even lighter than 951s!! But again, you have to pay for it, and a stock 911 turbo is at least double the cost of a 951 if not triple. And that doesn't include modding costs either.

I think a modded race 928 fits somewhere in between. Lots more reliable power potential than a 951, however much much heaver than a 911 platform. I think a lot of people are turned off from the 928 for racing because it is a GT car loaded with lots of extras that are dead weight for racing. I don't really know how much of that weight can be shed and neither do most people I think... That and the difficultly of finding a cheap, 5spd S4.

I think, a 951 is a great way to get into racing.. It's super easy to catch, lots of mods available for it, and it'll easily pull ahead of many other cars... but if you want to be competetive you will have to move up eventually. (either that or be ready to rebuild that car from scratch and spend $$$,$$$)

go with a 944 turbo and if you can get an S version go for that. 928 S4s can be very very fast but i prefer the handling of my 944 to the 928. Could be preference and i was up at RA when the 928 S4 was running 2:18s and i was shocked. So i wont step on the toes of 928 drivers. But my first P-car is a 944 turbo and after having driven a 993 on the track as well as a 996 C2 and 996 TT, i would still pick my 944 but then again it isnt stock so who knows. The car is very easily modded and can be very very fast if set up correctly.

boqueron:
I have a 2001 Caterham Super Light R and a 73 911. I use the 911 for the track car. The Caterham is much quicker, but there's also a lot less "stuff" around you in it, especially when sharing the track with Porsches, Corvettes, and such. If I were you, I'd go for a 993 Cup car. You can get one for between 55,000 to 65,000. They've got air jacks and centerlocks, not to mention killer brakes and suspension. You could also search for a Factory 993 RSR, it has a whole lot more than the 993 cup, but for only around 10,000 more. There are also tons of race prepped 911s out there in the 25-35k range that are pretty sweet as well.

Here's the $64,000 question for you 928ers. In what venue can you competitively race them? I am reading about how fast they are & can be made, but in what series and class would they be running up front? I am thinking about getting back into club racing next year and would like to get a reasonably fast car that would be at the top of the class. BTDT in F stock, but this time around would like to go a little quicker.
