Default A lap of VIR. I am looking for how/where to improve...

This past October I had a chance to go to VIR with the Audi club and I was able to secure some Hoosier's for my 996 GT3. I hadn't run Hoosiers in a couple years since I enjoy the convenience of the Nitto NT-01s, so it took a day or so to adapt to how they felt. The increase in grip is definitely addictive although I'll likely return to NT-01s when they become available. I have club raced before a few years ago and currently run in the top run group in my local PCA region but I feel like I have reached a plateau in my driving. I'll be actively seeking some coaching in 2015. In the meantime I just have video to review and I am hoping some of the experts in this forum can provide some insight based on what they see I am doing in the car. I know it's very limited and imperfect, but any input will be appreciated. The car is a 2004 996 GT3 with full interior and standard gearing. I have some old JRZ RS shocks and hoosier R7s (245/295) on the car during the video. I am chasing my friend's modified 997 GT2 and this is our 2nd lap. Thanks for any advice or insight.

Need more data... But you knew I was going to say that.

Nice pause while you let the car finish turning into T1, but impatient and choppy on the gas, and cavalier with the wheel...

Coasting before braking. Numerous times. VERY evident into T3. Not decisive turning to the left for T2, either. Coasting into the brake zone for T3.

Need to get all the turning in and be more proactive on the throttle at T3. No reason you can't keep feeding throttle back to the right after T4. SUPER lazy turn in for T5A.

NOT good turning in from the middle of the road on the flat to the left before the climbing esses, you had cleared the car you passed, now get back on line...

That causes you to early T8, the first right. The white car is in much better position. Causes you to be off throttle for an extended period before the crest.

Slow right foot at South Bend. The corner hasn't changed since the last time you went throught there...

Good entry into T11, meandering after and between T11 and Oak Tree, even with the traffic on the left. Want to see you driving, rather than riding, through that section.

Sloppy turn in to T12, adding steering later is rear-guard action. Very late on the power, because of that.

Your accel-braking transition is slow at the end of the back striaght, cutting across to the right on a diagonal for the turn-in for the downhill would be ok if you were braking more efficiently, but you're not... Slow on power to the right down the hill...

Good finish to T14 and good turn to the left at T15, although I'd recommend shifting up earlier so you can commit sooner to power.

Nice parabola between T15 and T16. Entry geometry is good entering T16, curb placement is good, but you don't brake hard enough.

You are coming away from the left edge for Hog Pen too soon. Entering shallowly and braking harder later, then adding steering at the apex RIGHT as the road drops away, JUST like you do at T14...

Could be much more fluid there if you weren't trying to cram so much in such a short distance... Need to be more proactive with the throttle.

Your approach into Hog Pen is too tight, resulting in your pointing to the outside too soon and subsequently requiring a pretty violent steering correction, when you should be steady state. Exit of Hog Pen is messy, too. Should not require all that steering input... Throughout. You can fix it by exit of T16, entry of T17 braking, turning and establishing the arc coming away from the left edge of the road at the end of the curb on the left. There's a good bit of time with FAR less drama possible, there...

You have potential... Thanks for posting.

Thank you Peter. I was hoping to get your input. I am hoping next year to find an opportunity to work with you.

That would be fun! I would install enough gear temporarily so we could see throttle input and RPM.

I could REALLY help with detailed, granular topographical information.

Would like to work on your vision, too. Let me know.

2:05.5 on your second lap in traffic.
Not too shabby.
2:03.8 is the J class record, but that was with the old pavement.

Peter's finite level of detailed analysis is pretty amazing.

KJ long time no chat. Is that Karl's former GT3....

I'll leave the comments to the pros!

Hope you are doing well.

Peter is the man. I did a 2:06 at VIR my first time with the gt3 at VIR and Peter gave me similar video feedback. A month later, I managed a 2:02 with his feedback.

Are you doing the PCA zone 2 event in March.

Nice lap

Amazing how fast the 997 GT3's are.

Here are a couple of high 2:07's in my G stock 964.

Open to any criticism /suggestions, TIA.
Only my second time to VIR, so I know I have time left on the table.

I think the key for you is more brake and less gas. Email me your data and I'll let you know for sure. Nice laps btw, looks like I need to revisit 3rd in SB again.

Of course would be happy to read any of Peter's thoughts/pointers.... as always!

Hey Jim, hope we can have some more fun next year. Congrats on the Summit TR. That was pretty sweet.

I'm running the 275, so if your running the 285 4th might work better in SB.

Thanks! - should be at my usual 3, WG, VIR and SPR-- hopefully.

I went back to 275s for VIR. SB is about a 90-91 min for me when I get it right which does mean lugging out of there in 4th. 3rd is busy going in w/ the downshift and then another shift coming out but......... I usually go against conventional wisdom in the lower gear when in doubt so will try 3rd again in June.
