Default BFG R1 vs R1S

I've been using the R1 as a DE tire this year and I've been happy with it. But I'm finding it heat cycles out well before it's worn out. I'm thinking about using the R1S if I can still get a decent amount of heat cycles before it's worn. Anyone have thoughts or experience as to how well the R1S lasts as a DE tire?

As a race tire, it lasts as long competitively as an A6 but will hang in for practice a bit longer.

As a DE tire I would imagine you'll be disappointed by a lack of longevity. If you want to spend and go fast(er) for one event (i.e. enjoy and play with a stickier tire), go for it, or spring for a set of A6s.

You might want to look at the Nitto NT01s as well. Our CDI compared them very favorably to the Hoosier he runs. And they seem to last with no apparent heat cycle issue prior to wearing out.

Your avatar pic and your statement remind me of an autocross quote: If you're not spinning you're not going fast enough.

Remember the R1S's, as does the A6, starts working at a lower temp., about 140-150 degrees, so the grip comes on sooner. In a DE situation that might work because it is rare that the car is being pushed as hard as it would in a race situation........in most cases.

So is the R1-S the same as an A6 or R6?

I tried some R1S from Tirerack when they suggested the R1S would probably be OK for 70% of the number of HC that the R1 would provide.

First set lasted 28 HC, second set is approaching that number. Wear wasn't the issue, but the blue band in the tread coincided with less grip.

I know some quick drivers who get maybe 40 HC from their R1, at which point the tires are pretty worn.

Interesting.

I get 3 to 4 competitive cycles out of both R1S and A6s.

R1S worthless after about 8, same as the A6.

Please define "competitive cycle".

If they loose grip to the point that my beer spills, they're no longer competitive.

My experience with the R1S in DE runs is they work very well for the first few HC, maybe 6-8, then plateau at about 2-3 seconds a lap slower until they really lose grip - that was 28 HC on the first set.

KaiB: Does it matter which hand you're holding your beer in? Or whether it's domestic or imported?

dave-C2: Thanks. That's very helpful!
