Big Brother at your next PCA race
#47
My buddy had one in his SP3 944S2 (pre-OBD2) for the Sunday enduro, had AIM silver sticker on it.
I asked Chris Blazer (scrute) what was the difference between it and the AIM device in my son's car next to it, he said basically the same thing with tach pickup.
The device has it's own built on gel cell battery to keep them from having to tap into your electrical system so compared to the AIM dash devices, they are quite bulky and heavy.
Mounts to cage bar at passenger door.

It's a slick setup.

While I'm all for tighter scrutineering, I'm a bit skeptical about the data being interpreted and used properly.
There are easily recognizable things being missed at race weekends all the time.
This car ran in F class all weekend at Sebring. Should have been G prepared at 3182 or H prepared at 2910.
964 RSA
3.8 wing
big reds
from the video seems to have a ring and pinion change or non stock gearing
When I looked it over after the enduro there wasn't any ballast installed...I don't how it weighed 3182.
First time with PCA, and I'm not sure it was even their car. Not trying to say they were cheaters, I don't believe they knew what the proper class for the car was.
I'm also not trying to slam the scruts or PCA. I think they have their hands full just making sure people have the correct safety equipment installed.
I've never worked a race, but do know they are pretty busy all weekend.
The log book tech is not thorough enough.
Cars are checked to be legal to race, not checked for class legality. That usually only happens if the particular scrutineer has personal knowledge of the car.

The reason for the RPM pickup in the scruts data package is to check gearing, final drive and reconcile it to the proper numbers. Nothing interpreted, just fact.
It's a great step by the PCA Club Racing program, IMO.

I'm the buddy with the SP3 944s2. I have no problem with being monitored, all though I wonder if the comparisons between cars in my class (pre-OBD2) would be valid given different tire sizes, compounds, gear ratios, etc.

Nigel (the coach/driver in the video) and the car owner were from the UK, the car was a rental, IIRC. He's outdroving most of the folks out there, in all of the classes... I don't know the car, but I do know the driver. He's more than capable.

The car was a still in the wrong class. A 3.8 wing is a very noticeable thing on a F stock 964.

Hopefully if nothing else it will identify cars for deeper scrutiny rather than just relying on the data. Right now it's a process of looking for outliers based on timing results. It would be great if this was fairly widespread and once eyebrows were raised, a deeper inspection would be initiated.
Guys running 3.4's instead of 3.2's should get caught.

Glad to see more checking.
Using a radar gun at the end of a straight after a slow turn is also an easy way to find possible cheaters. Speeds could be posted for everyone to see. We had that at the SCCA runoffs.

My comments were aimed at your spoof of Scruts changing the mapping, nothing more. My weight/whp comment was after I said "If they want to control power than they better start looking at the weight/whp classifications"....

You guys are hilarious.
Peter K is spot on. After spending a weekend learning the capabilities of the AIM data system I bought one.
Check your gears....
PCA is working on some really cool stuff.

My AIM system plugs into my OBDII port. How does that work? Will both work together?
