I just read this article on CNN about how some guy just broke the East-West coast speed record in a MB AMG averaging 98 mpg with a peak speed of 158 mph. http://www.cnn.com/2013/10/31/us/new...html?hpt=hp_c3
I think it's safe to say that this was not on a closed course! The article casts a positive light on this guy's 'accomplishment' which I find disturbing. Two guys driving at those speeds for 28 hours straight on public roads = DOUCHEBAGS. I hope they gather the guy's video and data and lock him up.

Good for them and I hope they had a blast doing it.

I wish I were still young and dumb enough to try to break his record myself......

I'm surprised to see this sentiment expressed here.
Wasn't it just a few months ago that someone from RL had their Ferrari involved in a high speed kill of an innocent bystander? It's interesting that the 'good for you' viewpoint was absent from that story.

Interstates aren't city streets, and the average street racer doesn't have advance scout cars - there is a BIG difference in the risk factors in play.

Maybe so but the article even talks about a close encounter with a FedEx truck who "didn't check his mirrors." I'm sure there were quite a few similar encounters.

The car smelling like fuel doesn't inspire confidence. nor does confirming it before the statues of limitation has expired.

I think this sort of behavior on public roads, for 2800 miles, is insane. Just like the maroons who do that Gumball Rally every year.

I read The Driver by Alex Roy a few years back and still have the hardback in my collection. I thought the overall story including his experiences surround 9-11 were very motivational, the work hard and don't forget your dreams mentality that drives me.
Most of us at one time or another have romanticized about the antics in the Cannonball movies or the crazy chases in our favorite car movie (e.g. Gone in Sixty Seconds, Ronin, Transporter, Vanishing Point, for some even Smokey and the Bandit). Likely every one of us has exceeded the posted limit at some time, somewhere on public roads.
The training and awareness level of the average driver on a public highway is mediocre at best. Most people look at driving as a necessity, just another task on their daily list. The percentage of the population that both enjoys driving and have developed some significant skill level is very, very small.
To even attempt, let alone complete and then brag about running in excess of 90 mph across the entire nation is ludacris. How many times did he pass a mother taking their children to school, a father returning home at the end of a long shift, a drunk driver, a texting driver, etc.?
This was an irresponsible act that could have ended very badly for the occupants of his car and potentially pedestrians or the occupants of other vehicles.

I'm just jealous that somebody else did it. I save my racing for the track, but the Cannonball has been on my bucket list for years. Who here has really never aired their Porsche out on the interstate? Tell the truth!
