Default Can you unhook a trailer for a car on it?

I have a steel trailer to tow my 944 turbo. Trying to combine a track day with a business meeting and want to leave the trailer in the parking lot of the hotel. I have a lock to make sure no one makes off with the trailer.

Does anyone have any experience with unhooking a trailer while it still has a car on it or is this looking for trouble? The trailer has four wheels and a beaver tail. I was thinking that I could put jack stands around it so it doesn't lean back or forward too much.

Should I just take the car off or am I worried about nothing?

99.9% worried about nothing. Jack the trailer off its receiver - you'll easily sense that limited 0.01%chance of unbalance.

Be SURE to chock the trailer well afterwards.

I do it all the time. In fact my race car lives sitting on my steel trailer in my garage. Just make sure you are on level ground and well chocked.

I do it all the time. Make sure you have the correct tongue weight so it doesn't tip back and that you chock the trailer BEFORE you unhook it.

Now don't take the car off the trailer with it unhooked.....I've seen a few good dented tailgates from guys that forgot to latch the trailer to the ball.....

I have a similar setup, ie steel trailer with a 944 Tubo or Chumpcr on it. As others have said you need Tongue weight. You also don't want people jumping on the dovetail when unhooked.

Thanks for all the answers. For some reason I had visions of everything going wrong and people saying "what the hell was he thinking!"

NEVER EVER unhook the trailer with a car on it while stradeling the front of the tongue.

if the tongue DOES go up when you unhook it, then your car is not on it correctly. There should be a decent amount of weight on the tongue for balance anyway...

Just make sure the weight is positively distributed on the trailer tongue and chock the trailer wheels. I do it all the time.

If you must take off your car unhooked from the tow vehicle chock the trailer wheels so it doesnt move forward and put jackstands at the *** end of the trailer.

Is it too much trouble to unload the car and park it next to trailer? Safer perhaps?

I did it for the first time a couple weeks ago with the 944 spec. With a front engine car you should be fine and if you have a tire rack on the front with an extra set, even better fpr weight distribution purposes.
