It has been a few decades since I was out autocrossing with an old clapped out Porsche. Life seemed to interrupt my interests for a while but now I am in a position to enjoy some time at the track. I was lucky enough last year to ride with Spencer Pumpelly at VIR when he was with TRG. It got my juices flowing again so I went on the hunt for a suitable track platform. Not too fast. Not too expensive. Not too complicated. VIR is only an hour or so away and i have the chance to jump on some private track days there from time to time. I also am interested in as many DE events as I can do and will look for an instructor to help my learning curve.
Now to the car!

After months of lurking and hunting I was lucky enough to buy a pristine special order 996 that was meant for the track. Originally ordered by an avid PCA member it has the sunroof delete, no traction control, sport suspension, Carrera spoiler, and sport seats.

The car had two previous owners and about 6 years of service records. It was obviously well cared for. I had Porsche Atlanta do the RMS and install the LN IMS so that there would be no concerns going forward. (Except my driving ability.).

Got the car here and it was not handling well and was terribly noisy. Turns out the rear tires were badly worn, so Porsche Atlanta helped me out and we put new Bridgestone Poz Pole Position tires on. Digital Chassis aligned the car and increased the camber. Much quieter and much better handling.

Today was the first day to get a close look at the car. I find that a good washing and detailing helps you understand the overall condition a bit better. So, wash, dry, clay, polish with Menzerna SIP medium polish, then Blackfire polymer paint protection. Now she is smooth, which means she will be faster right?

I know the conventional wisdom is to buy a built car, but I really enjoyed gradually taking my original stock Boxster and slowly converting it to an awesome track machine. I think it played a huge role in my development as a driver as well.

When I take mine with an iPhone I email them. The phone asks for the size I wish to use and I choose medium. This size also works well for uploading as the file size is small.

996's at the track can run hot so invest in a centre radiator kit and be sure the other radiators are clear of leaves and other crap.

If I were to list in order the modifications I've found to have the most impact in a 996 track car (after safety equipment of course) I would start with suspension mainly GT3 lower control arms f & r to get some neg. camber into the setup (they will pay for themselves in tire life). Second up I would install adjustable sway bars and drop links. And thirdly I would invest in a strong LSD. Those combined with proper setup will transform how that car handles. If you really start beating on that car then consider the 3rd radiator, a trans cooler, and track/race pads. The OEM brakes & rotors are great, they just need some decent pads and a race brake fluid like Endless, Motul, or SRF. Have fun.....
