Default New AIM Smarty Cam HD test at Sebring

I have just returned from the Sebring IMSA races. Thanks to Josh and Enrico of AIM, I was allowed to test a couple of the new HD Smarty Cams in our 997 GT 3 Cup. The first think I noticed was that the cameras can now be run in parallel, thus giving the opportunity to run multiple cameras all with data from the CAN. This is due to a different firmware in the cameras. That said, they have not yet created a picture in a picture. However, I was able to use the Smarty Manager video playback which will run two videos simultaneously and accomplish the same effect. The new cameras have internal timing which makes it very easy to sync the two videos (one out the windshield and one on the driver).

Here is a link to one lap from the HD camera. Overall, I am very impressed with the new cameras, but they are not available to purchase yet.

Here is a screen shot of what the Smarty Manager screen looks like:

Hmm.....maybe it is the video editing or compression for uploading but it looks choppy (like a fast stop-motion film).

Any idea when they go on sale? I am tired of replacing GoPro's a couple of times a year.

Marc

edit: retried it and looks perfect now

The picture is excellent on my HD TV, not choppy at all. I found the video to be choppy on my home PC but not on my laptop (which is newer), so, it might be the graphix interface on your pc also. My video editing software is from 2007. I bought a new version for HD but can't get to work yet. I'll contact them tomorrow to figure that out. I hope to post a better quality clip soon.

The cameras will not be available for a month or so. I've been told that these will be sold for the same price as the old SC, but won't guarantee that. I'll post to Rennlist as soon as I get a batch of them. HYere are some phoros of the unit, quite different from the original SC and it uses a regular SC card which makes life easier at the track.

I guessed it was an interface thing as AIM only make good stuff (I have a SmartyCamGP too).

Hmm...looks alot like the GoPro, eh?

Marc, the video plays great over my broadband connection in the UK, so it must be good!

I'm looking forward to my first shipment in the few weeks.

I think P-I-P is overrated.

It does look (shape) like the GoPro, but it is a metal housing and looks to be very rugged. Can't wait to get some to put in service. I thought HD was over rated as these are a tool to learn how to drive better, but now I do really like the HD. The HD file sizes are not that much larger and the regular SC due to some new compression AIM uses. I ran one camera beside a GP and the file on the GP was 2 Gig and the new camera was a little less than 3 Gig.

Updated the video clip using an HD video editing software and changed to Vimeo. This should look better.

Jerry,

You mentioned you might make it to RA next weekend. Still in the plans?

Peter - I've a 100 Mbps cable connection that tests at a true 85-90 Mbps and running on a latest generation MacBook Pro so I don't think it is me.

Regardless, Jerry the new video looks great!

When I click "HD" on the bottom right, it displays correctly. The audio is out of sync.

Correct on the audio, it was out of sync on the original video. AIM had their two top software guys with them so they are well aware of that. I will be at Road Atlanta but not sure if it will be for the whole event or just to deliver the car in the video to Spencer ***.

Peter, where will you be hanging out? I'd like to meet with you

VR, a second in T1.....Spencer Pompelly drove a C5 at the event and john was within 0.2 of his T-1 time. But I'm sure he'd be happy to hear your thoughts. See you at RA.

See you there! But look how late he is to throttle in T1 Put Pumpelly in John's car and then it's a valid comparison
