Is it just me, or does getting t-boned by the DeltaWing seem like it would be a really bad thing compared to just about any other car it might share the track with?

The aforementioned incidents there; the 917 and the Liebler fatality, among others, were before Panoz had the switchback configured. It was an audacious section of track before that, you'd never see a design like that again.
As for the Delta Wing, it's so low and small I'll bet it's hard to see. The Porsche either snagged a wheel on the curbing or was headed to pit in. In any case, it looks like an inherent design weakness, that thing flips way too easily.

That's true, Frank. That turn (11) is far slower and has far better visibility than it did before 1999. Still, a dumb accident, one IMO, that the DW got the raw end...

Depends on the way the crush structure is built. Likely that was taken into consideration though.

Anyone ever sat in a chair with 3 legs? It's much more unstable than 4 legs...

But no worries, they've made some improvements and are confident this will not happen again.

I had my years incorrect, and I realize now Scott's name rings a bell for me. I don't know if I have ever been able to find Scott's name. I was sitting on the hill with my dad to the left of the bridge. I would have been 8 at the time and saw the entire incident. I still have the image of how the incident happened, which still really bothers me now that I think about it. RIP indeed.

The turn in on that thing seems more than I'm used to seeing. Or is it exaggerated by its shape?

Liebler's crash was on the SCCA Video they released that year of the Runoffs, I have a copy (but no VCR anymore!). He smashed down on his rollbar so hard it failed.
We've seen a similar situation when Johnny Rutherford ran over a wheel at the Phoenix Oval in the Chapparral Indy Car and I'm still baffled that he walked. That was a testament to one of the first Carbon Fiber tubs.
